Forest Runner For once I'm pleased with a time that I should really be capable of doing so much better than.
I missed six weeks training and was not going to attempt a pb, so I planned to do the first half in about 2 hours (1:55 to make sure that I started the second lap before the half marathoners got under way two hours after the start of the marathon). I was planning to do the second half as if it was just a half marathon, although obviously knowing it would be a bit slower than a normal half marathon. I hoped and expected to do 4 hours at very worst.
After less than one mile, a young lady ran alongside me and started chatting. She wanted to beat her marathon pb of 4:12 and was intending to do the first half in 2 hours, so we decided to run together for the first half.
We did pass the end of the first lap almost exactly on 1:55 and I thought that if I ran the second half faster, I might just be able to get a 3:40-3:45, which wouldn't be a pb, but if I continued with the young lady (Anna) for the second half, she would probably get a pb (she might have got a pb on her own anyway).
The weather was very pleasant and holding a conversation all the time made the miles pass so much faster, so I decided to take the easy option and stay with Anna. After about 20 miles, she was beginning to tire, but she kept on going, although she needed to stop for about three minutes at about 23 miles to answer the call of nature. We reached the 25 mile marker at exactly 3:50, having passed 20 miles at exactly 3:00, so we were averaging about 10 minute miles at that stage, so I thought that trying to finish the last 1.22 miles in 10 minutes might be just too much for Anna. We finished in 4:01:21 (I finished 1 second after Anna, letting her go through the funnel first), and Anna beat her pb by over 10 minutes.
It was probably my most enjoyable marathon because I hadn't stressed myself and apart from the last two miles where we had quite heavy rain, it was very pleasant running conditions, although a bit too windy. Helping someone else get a pb is the next best thing to getting a pb yourself. Bracknell Forest Runners 3:21:04 3:28:16 4:01:22 55.96
