Go-KL As things have turned out I am going directly from the Bristol Half straight up to the Lake District for a holiday. It turns out that on the day we leave there is this Half Marathon that has some rave reviews and is right next to where we are staying. I have no real desire to set a fast time, the reputation that goes with this race implies that I should be happy just to finish, especially as it is my birthday the day before - which I intend celebrating! The time is a total guess as as the results from last year look insanely slow!!!! What have I let myself in for!
Post Race:
Suffice to say it was by far the hilliest race I have ever run - by the last hills between 10 and 12 miles I was reduced to a pathetic shuffle when I wasn't actually stopping for a sneaky walk. Still - aided by a swift first 3 miles in 6 min milling pace I settled into 11th position by the first killer hill at around 3 miles and that position was never really threatened, when I realised at 10 miles that I was not going to catch the guy in front I settled into the not so simple matter of trying to make it up the hills and making it down the other side of them without putting my toes through the ends of the trainers. No real injury problems except a tight right calf and a left hip which moaned at times. Grantham Running club 1:14:46 1:19:45 1:35:00 1:27:41 66.12
Caterpillar It's impossible to predict a really fast time on this. It's REALLY hilly. I'll be happy to do anything inside 2:00 but we'll see how the training goes over the summer. Might modify the prediction if I'm in good shape in August. OK - prediction coming down to 1:45 after the Duathlon result. Finished very strongly in that - faster second 5k than first. I haven't run as much this summer as last but I might get within a couple of minutes of last year which would make me very very happy. I'm going to think of it as a training run for another half marathon (Cardiff? Marlow? Stevenage?) in October or November. [After the race] 1:40:04 BRILLIANT day. overcast and cool and a tiny bit of drizzle. Perfect! Knocked more than a couple of minutes off last year's time and blasted five off my target. It's still a complete b*****rd course and the most beautiful run you could imagine. My only two twinges of regret were failing to run all the way up the last pass - a couple of hundred yards of walking which I have never done before - and failing to find any other Fetchites - there were at least four others there none of whome were wearing Fetch vests and none of whom said Hi. I'll be back next year. I have to be. I just love the Lake District. Rocket Rod the organiser was funny as always. Unaffiliated 1:28:56 1:40:04 1:45:00 1:40:04 63.82
