Kaine Planning a 20-mile trail race with only 5 recovery days following a cross-country marathon was never going to be the smartest move. That those days included a raging fever and two days of barely being able to eat or digest food, it was left until Friday night to decide to go to today's race.

The course takes in some great, wide-open landscapes, and with this morning's big blue skies it promised to be quite a contrast to my race recce of a fortnight ago, through mist and drizzle on trails deep with all that April could through at them. It also includes category awards for the UK:A Trail Running Championship (middle distance), which explained some of the running vests sported by strong young men nonchalantly toeing the start line: RONHILL Cambuslang Harriers, Godalming Surrey - these guys hadn't come for the porcelain race memento.

A field of maybe 150-or-so prepared for the gun, those running the 33-mile course having started an hour or more beforehand. Within a hundred metres of the start, I said to the 2 runners next to me Frome Running Club 2:22:39 2:22:39 2:45:00 2:22:39 65.08
