Wow, loved this. I never knew muscles could hurt so bad the day after a race. My time included a toilet break so minus this was 2hours 45 so happy with this considering the weather and the hills. Good stuff. Very happy.
My favourite race of the year - not all that bothered about the time, the atmosphere is all for me!
A little on the warm side - going very well up to about 8 miles but tailed of dramatically after that - enjoyed the weekend never-the-less!
Missed out on London marathon, so doing this as my big race for the year. Just got my race pack, race number 41417...training all done now, kit is ready bring on race day..No chance of a pb so jogged round at 7.45 pace and took in the atmosphere what a great event
Not the time I wanted, but still a great race.
Ran with mum, both suffering from stomach bug.
Running in a wetsuit was a stupid, stupid, stupid idea.
Hoping for a PB - first serious attempt at a 13.1 miler
Struggled to hobble the distance with a dodgy ankle - disappointed not to get under 2 hours - still a PB but not one to shout about
Not bad with only 2 miles training WORK
Ooh, flipping heck. I didn't notice, but my ballot application was sort of successful...
Zone C and in fancy dress - 1.48.04 - Splits 8:01, 7;59, 7:57, 8:08, 8:29, 7:57, 7:46, 8:09, 8:23, 8:26, 8:34, 8:37, 7:59, 1:33 - Pleased.
a new pb....very surprised considering the temperature...enjoyed today, great weather again and great atmosphere all the way round
thats 3 new pb's this year
Don't know what went wrong again - maybe a bit of training next time.
Missed this in 2008 due to late injury and still not even done a HM to date (but will have several completed by the time this one comes around)
Gone and done it, entry confirmed hope to beat last years time of 1 30 03, can I sneak under 1 30. A lots changed since I hoped to sneak in under 90 mins, and its testament to how my running has developed over the last 12 months that now I was pleased after limited training to sneak under 80 mins. 110 overall and 9th V40-- chuffed
Caroline Baba Ball
Very hot day! - Got sunburn
Saved by the medics and the Bupa physio!
My first GNR & what an atmosphere! Neither the heat nor the hills bothered me in the slightest, but I did find it difficult trying to keep a steady pace once I reached the stragglers from the Orange starting group - I was White - whilst also avoiding the multitude of bottles on the road. Even going downhill, my toes were banging against the front of my running shoes as I braked to avoid inexperienced or unprepared runners. That said, they were all wearing charity vests & had more of a right to be there than I did! If I did enter again, I would probably lie about an expected finishing time to ensure I started closer to the front.
Everything went exactly to plan until last mile. Didn't have anything left and missed out on sub 1:25 and also missed PB by just 8 seconds.
Pretty congested as usual, quite warm, slightly dissapointed with time but a Pb nevertheless!
I'm in! First HM, eeek!!
God I struggled on this. Naebody told me it was hilly:-(
An awesome experience nevertheless and the support is incredible. At least I beat Cheryl Baker off of Bucks Fizz.............
Great day but hotter than expected - foot in pain last couple of miles but well worth it!
hit 10 mile in a pb, thought it was too good to be true, when I was hit by a stitch at 11 mile, ran the rest of the way doubled over...damn but again next year!!
Gonna aim for another pb- under 1.55. How about 1.50. Well, felt poorly on the day and wanted to stop after 4 miles- legs like jelly Disappointed with my time, but actually, it's my 2nd best ever, so shouldn't feel too bad.
good atmosphere but traffic was bad.... started the race right from the very end.
Finally a PB in 2009!!!
Entry confirmed *dances a wee jig* Gonna be my main focus race for the rest of the summer. 28 years on since my first one - Yikes!
little bit disapointed to be nearly 1 minute off last years time. chip time was off tho, garmin said 1h 16m 03s so 23 seconds went missing somewhere even tho it only took about 3 seconds to cross the start line. got a stitch just after 1k and didnt go till crossing the timing mat at 15k but still happy with 74th position overal
2nd GNR. 2:13 last year so would love to crack 2:10 as hoping the mara training in first half of year will help.
Update: not sure what went wrong there - wasn't supposed to be able to run that fast!!!
Got in on a charity place whey hey !!
unbelievably hot weather.got a touch of heatstroke, but luckily did not pull a leg muscle,as is so often the case.a good run ,with a good time for me ,given the crowds and the hot weather conditions.probably the hottest run ever.although 2005 or 2006 were also extreemly hot later on in the day.
Not my day! Hot, lots of jossling and couldn't get through the finish line due to cordoning off of one side for celebs. All this, and not in best condition!
Really hot day killed me in the second half!! Really good race with public support everywhere. Excellent race co-ord and highly recommended.
Vicki: Graceless Whippet
Ballot entry confirmed and have decided to run it in fancy dress again. Would love to be the fastest fairy round the course
Happy with the time as it's what I was expecting, would have been better if I didnt struggle around 11 mile point.
Great day - Ran comfortable 7 min/miles with a hard last mile.
bit slower than last year but happy enough
Injured knee so attempting this one walking! Just aiming to get round for my charity.
gutted with my time, race went ok, paced myself well for a strong finish was feeling fine but spent the last 5 mile weaving around people who were walking 3 abreast listening to ipods. this course is far too busy
Sub 2hrs so I am happy, was on for 1hr 50 but unexpected severe sunshine stopped me in my traks, amazing atmosphere and the Half Marathon to do for everyone! Loved it!
Last mile took about 11 minutes - other than that a v.enjoyable experience.
Very hot & hilly - not a brill time but really loved the race. Fab atmosphere. Will do more hill training for next year
awful but no traing at all for it.
This race actually measured out for me at 13.25 miles. My 13.1 mile time was 2:29:32 :D
Gone completely mad! Always wanted to do it by the time I was 50 (November this year). Barring injury I will get round even if the CFS is bad and I have to crawl it!!! Raising money for Alzheimers Society in memory of my beloved Dad.
Due to injury etc did 200+ miles less this year. Ran first mile in just over 8 min which was a bot fast. was still ahead of 8.45 min pace target at mile 9 but tired badly in heta and suffered a bit till the end. Nonetheless still pleased to complete in one piece and respectable time. Keep training for next year and sub 1hr56m target.
No injuries this year apart from black nail. same tow as last year and not sure what causes it.
Found the run really hard in the heat. Got to John Reid Rd & was just praying that i could finish!
Haven't been able to get a chiptime and my watch failed on the day, but i think i was around the 2.06 time
Really enjoyable event, fantastic, can't wait till next year
How close was that???
My first ever GNR so really not sure what to expect other than a cracking atmosphere! I'm not fast - did a 1hr 59 min at Leeds Half this May - but would love to get another pb. My aim is to go for it and just hope I don't end up having to walk too much if caught up in the masses?
Slow and Ultra Steady
Knee trouble prevented me from pushing up any sort of incline but managed a course pb by 7m27s...i am now in severe pain!!
Running on a charity place so not running for a PB at all (good job) as in terms of running time, one of my worst ever 1/2 marathon times. It was hot and tough out there - the next person who tells me the GNR is flat will get a punch in the eyes - it is gradual climbing the whole way. Very hot, passed a lot of people being helped by paramedics by side of road and saw three emergency ambulances. Hope they are all okay. I made a conscious decision at about the 9 mile mark that I wanted to finish the race by running across the line, not being carried away on a stretcher, so I just slowed right down, walked a bit and just soaked up the atmosphere. I wanted to run this race just to say I did it and I have done it, but I doubt I will do it again. Too big, too crowded, too much waiting around. I was out of the house for 8 hours in total yet was only running for 2 and a bit of those hours. And I only live 9 miles away from the start. But it is an event that you probably have to do at least once just to experience the bizarre surrealness of it all!
I'm really pleased with my new PB for the half marathon...I've exceeded my hopes of getting under 1hr50 and if only I'd looked at my watch that bit sooner at the end I might have made it in under 1hr45.
As good as the time was I've got to say it was incredibly frustrating as I couldn't get into my own stride very often and fond myself running sideways and slipping through people going slower. The sheer volume of runners did detract somewhat from the actual running experience though I'd still love to do it again just for the amazing atmosphere and the whole day itself.
Knackered not bad. Best time in this run plus the fact that I was on Chemo at the start of the year.
want to break the 80 min barrier - even it is by only a second
Might have got that predicted time if I wasn't dressed in a Black Widow Spider outfit! Hey ho!
Really would like to do this in a PB but from what i have heard the crowds play a part in it!
What an experience, will definately do it next year!
Found it really hard from the 10 mile mark, hot one too. Pleased I have done it though and have now announced my retirement from half marathons.
Went off like a loon from the start, held sub-6mm pace to 3 miles, halfway in 40:08, then faded badly. Pitstop in mile 9, then overtaken by Spiderman with 800m to go. Great day though.
Perhaps took it too easy in the first half, then when I decided to step up my pace was confronted by masses of bodies. An absolutely awesome event, but not one for racing.
Absolutely wonderful event. Overjoyed at knocking over 2 minutes off my PB. Can't wait for next year!
Bad bad race - on recent form should have got under 1.40, but gut problems and never getting into stride scotched that. Bastard. Next year will go for the atmosphere and not for the time. Must find nearby half marathon to make good.
Its a good hurt .very rewarding ,glad to finish on a hot day took advantage of residents ice lollies on the way round
Got a charity place for Meiningitis UK
Great experience. Tough course so really happy with the time. My first run on 1 May seems like a long time ago but definitely worth all the effort.
10k 23.10 - 46.13
15k 23.41- 1.09.54
I'm aiming to beat 1hr 20. Perhaps by writing this down this will somehow happen?!?
hard race for me and the lack of trainign and fitness hit me big time and i struggled for a third of the race and wanted to walk but jsut kept going. will be back stronger and faster next week
1st proper race since recovering from the calf injury. Happy to get down to shields painfree and well within the 2 hour mark. Nearly 8 minutes slower than last year but I'm okay with that. Very warm and sunny. But still a fantastic race.
finished with a PB of 2:03:27 - 375th out of 2081 in my Age/Sex Category
First ever Great North run and it was awesome. Was within a 2 hour time target but had to ease back around 10.5 miles. Harder than expected due to the heat. Brilliant atmosphere.
Didn't get predicted time, but still happy to just get under the 2hr mark. Had forgotten just how conjested things were early on and had to weave in and out until I could get from 10 min miling to nearer 8 / 8.5 . Given I never managed 1.45 when I was younger I've been over ambitious in predicting that time as a 40+ . Met and said hello to some fellow fetchies on the way.
First half marathon, well pleased with time given the number of runners, next half attempt will be a sub 1:50!
little disappointed lost around 45 seconds in first mile, hoped to break 1.27 but found last 5 miles a hard slog
Foot cramps by mile 9, pulled myself together by mile 11. Lost half an hour, not happy. But great day!
Had an achilles injury 3 weeks out which meant I only ran approx 5 miles in race - 3weeks to race - 1 week.
Started off quicker than previous years doing 6:30 - 6:40 mile pace. Struggled at 9 to 11 miles and pace dropped to over 7 minute pace but I found a 2nd wind on the coast road.
It was hot wasn't it? (At one point around Mile 7 we had to actually stop running and move to the verge to let through an ambulance with its siren blaring, so I hope nobody came fatally unstuck.) The crowds were great but finding out the highest point on the course was around 5 miles was all that got me up that long rise in South Shields at 11 miles. I'm content enough with this time - the sibling rivalry was settled the right way round - and I had a good day. This was my last guaranteed place. Will I be in the ballot again next year? Probably.
was ok but thanks to stupid idiots camping next to me the night before.. 2 hours sleep and a lot of waiting around didn't help.
was ok. too hot and too much hassle getting there etc. glad to have done it but won't be botheing again!
Hoping to beat 2 hours...at any rate it's looking good for a new PB!!
First ever half marathon - so always a definite PB - but was surprised just how fast I got round. Had an 'extra' bet with a bloke at work re: doubling his pledge for charity if I broke 1hr45 - so achieving 1hr 42.12 was just that little bit more special. Was well pleased - despite usual slowing at 7/8kms and then a slightly slower general pace from 14km through to 20km.
It was very warm and sunny throughout - 20 degrees - but thankfully there were showers, plenty of water points and spectators with ice pops along the route. People shouting your name at you does really spur you on too :O) Brilliant day!!!!
5km 00:22:06 - 10km 00:46:40 (6-10km 24:34) - 15km 01:11:17 (11-15km 24:37).
1km 4:12 / 2km 4:19 / 3km 4:24 / 4km 4:30 / 5km 4:28
6km 4:34 / 7km 5:06!! / 8km 5:03!! / 9km 4:49 / 10km 4:40
11km 4:42 / 12km 4:46 / 13km 4:46 / 14km 5:03 / 15km 5:03
16km 5:06 / 17km 5:13 / 18km 5:15 / 19km 5:12 / 20km 4:55
21km 4:48 / 21.1km 1.18 (1hr42.12)
Overall pace: 4.51 / km
Going to have to work very hard to get the time I want
First half. Would like to get under 2 hours but we'll see. Only 6 weeks of half training under belt.
A bit of fun!
**not well - terrible run - spent 5 mins or more in the loo**
my first half, really just want to finish. would like as near to 2hrs 10 as pos
very hot and hilly! difficult to run with so many people
Going to try my best to get under 83 min for the GNR, missed out by 3 sec last year................ UPDATE ....Just squeezed in under my target but i found it hard work, although managed to beat the baggage buses to South Shields. Just didn't feel fresh and legs felt heavy for some reason. Almost perfect weather, just a tad on the warm side. Finished 169th overall and 3rd V50 so happy with that.
What a hot day, very well organised but a slower time than last year at the cumbrian half
2 :17. 22
Pleasing result following yesturdays 14 mile Good Shepherd fell race
Garmin didn't work
Ran 5 miles with Tracey and then pushed on a bit quicker. Very hot day and very busy race. Pleased with time despite everything.
Only got a number the day before so ran it on no training. Enjoyed it though.
Mick the slug
Love the busy-ness of it all. This is my 11th running of it, 17th HM in total. Did a decent time, just outside PB for the event which wasn't bad given the heat. What really chuffed me was that I felt really comfortable the whole way. Kicked on at 11 miles and I don't think anyone passed me during the last 2 miles.
Then cycled 12.5 miles home which was a sheer joy past lines of stationary traffic! he he.
Hot! Walked a little through 'The Nook', not knowing how much further the hill had to go Ran fairly conservatively under a cloudless sunny sky so quite pleased with my time, knowing that with hindsight I could have done a little better! An unbelievable experience for my very first 'race'.
Princess Purple Bubbles
Had been on for a good time but stumbled on a water bottle with 4miles to go.I went one way and the knee went the other...an hour to 6km Was not a happy bunny!Back in 2010 to get that sub 2:30!
cramped up at 9 mile , continued after a quick leg massage fom a couple of st johns girls. finished in 130 but i was slightly disappointed because a bp was well on the cards with 4 mile to go. think i am gonna retire from this race i think, i have ran it 3 times, and 3 times i have suffered the dreaded calf cramps on the john reid road
I had a good race, suffered a bit in the heat, tried running in the shade, as per usual I was weaving in and out runners from start to finish
Two month injury. Two weeks training prior. 5, 8 and 10 miles training runs.
only had about 3 weeks training and preparation after long summer layoff due to Sciatica nerve problems in left leg
Matty aka lakerunner
it war hard this year wanted to break 2hr but it didn't happen
had to stop for a pee 3 times, had a really bad nights sleep as the hotel was above a nightclub - could have been better Lovely day though
Very, Very hot day, fell apart at mile 4, felt ill at finish and had to walk some of it, very dissappointed after all my training.
Ran with ITB from mile 5, couldn't walk next day as should have pulled out.
Started at the back of the crowds so spent alot of time running up and down embankments to get past people. Excellent run, crowds are fantastic, music out of this world and the welcoming shower on John Reid Road is a blessing. nothing has topped this run for me yet - although not done many...!
plenty of energy finished well
Red Scouse MK
Ran with partner for most of race who really struggled with injury and space to run before a two mile fast finish.
Great to have run it, great weather , great city .
Dressed as a banana - time is approx
First Half Marathon
First ever run
