The training plan I am following for the Mablethorpe marathon called for a half today and the only one I could find in the North was 2 hours and 90 miles away in Leek.
The entry form warned that runners should expect that their usual time expectations would be unlikely to be achieved and that we should look for at least 5/6 extra minutes to get round this extremely hilly half marathon in the Peak District.
That’s how it turned out for me. The length and steepness of the hills meant that I simply could not settle into anything like my target 6:50 minute pace. In total there are 665 metres of climbs to cope with and although there are as many metres of down hills they are so steep that caution is really required.
The heat provided an extra challenge and so I took full advantage of the frequent water and sponge stops. Garmin time
With a final kick of a climb in the last 200m this is the toughest race I have done so far and am quite happy with my time.

i used this race as part of my snowdonia marathon training i had completed this race 4 years ago in a time of 131 at the time i was running 6 days a week and gearing towards the toronto marathon in the sept 2006.
since then my running dropped as i went after other fitness goals. but i decided to enter this years snowdonia marathon and needed to get some nice hills in so i thought there is no better race than this leek half marathon.
i knew before hand i was never going to get near my 2006 time but still i was up for the task in hand.
again like 2006 the organization for this race was fantastic and for the £12 entree fee you wont find better value and plus you get a fantastic t-shirt . my time was 1.44.35 and great preperation for snowdonia
