very hot day
I am absolutely gutted by this result - and I apologise wholeheartedly to those who bet on me for today's race!
Oh well - it was less than 5 hours...
got my rejection from London so off to a city I prefer, for my first ever marathon!
loved it!! sneaked home in just under 3 hours so absoluely delighted. Was on track for a 2:50 but a combination of heat and lack of experience found me out. Had to sprint like bugger to finish under 3. A great experience will do more
So many things went wrong ........ must learn lessons before next one! Fetchpoint support was great as was the support from each of the fetchie runners.
Race is on my 42nd birthday so it would be a shame not to race
Sorry guys. blew up and failed.
Too hot......! 25degrees C for my first marathon. Was hoping for 4.40 or even 4.30 but the heat was opressive.
Hot! This was a lot harder than I thought it would be. I thought 4:30 was a likely target with 4:45 OK. On the day it was so hot that I pretty much ran out of steam after about 16 miles. I need to be a bit fitter before I try another marathon. No problems with water. However I could easily have drank more often than the water stations. Fetchpoint was amazing. I can't thank them enough.
Not a good race, as I ran too fast too soon at the start. Lots of lessons to be learned from this race. But definately doing it again next year.
Ideally I'm aiming to run this in 4 hours but will waiting until get results from half in October before starting to look at setting a goal for this.
After the race: it was sooo hot, plus my knee gave way at about 17 miles so had to walk/run the last bit!
Horrific weather, crap time, one to forget!
First proper marathon, well pleased with the time. So dam hot, struggled the last 7 - 8 mile, the heat and my calfs. Great support and a great day. Toes on right foot are a bit of a mess!!!
Brilliant support from Fetchpoint. Particular thanks to the lady who thrust a bottle of water in my hand at mile 22! I struggled so much with the heat today. Up till mile 10, the 3:30 was on... but by then the sun had burnt away the cloud cover and it was "scorchio" for the rest of the race. Walked / ran the last 5-6 miles
Pls Pls for the love of God lets have a PB !!
Another tilt at sub 4...
My first marathon so am hoping to enjoy. Training starts from now (Oct 09) and hopefully all will go well
Two years on and I'll hopefully be back and much stronger than last time- working on strenght and core so hopefully won re-injure and also will survive the London the month before !!
Just doing as a training run
This will be my first marathon. My predicted time is really something or me to aim for. It will be my birthday present to myself.
Very disappointed.Wheel came off around 18-19 miles.Thought I might not finish. The grass verges looked soo inviting. The folk along he route were brilliant.
I set off at a fair pace as I had a plan to aim for a 4hr time and just see how I got on. That plan was to get to 14miles by the 2hr mark and then see if I could do 10min miles the rest of the way. I made it to 14miles bang on 2hrs, having only had to stop for 30secs at about mile 11 to sort out my eyes as it was starting to heat up significantly by then and the sweat running into my eyes was making it impossible to see. I managed to make it to mile 16 before having to walk, but after that my legs ran out of energy and it was so difficult to keep any kind of momentum. I knew that the 4hr mark wasn't going to happen, so I just took my time and walked a fair bit, averaging about 12min miles. I stuffed my face with sweets at fetchpoint (which I really needed) and soon after, they kicked in and I was able to up the pace again to 9:30 min miles for the last 2, so I sprinted over the line in just under 4:20. I would have liked a faster time, but considering the heat and my severe lack of training, i'm happy enough with this. Thanks a million to everyone supporting and those at fetchpoint, you're all stars!
Having completed Blackpool in 3.36.30 as part of my training for Edinburgh I had high hopes of a sub 3.35 in Edinburgh, maybe even a sub 3.30! However, after a cloudy (though muggy) start, it soon changed to roasting hot on the day - about 20-25 degrees in the shade (not much of that either), with no cloud cover or wind. Really, really tough - lots of casualties.
Tried to keep up with PB pace to the halfway point but was forced to ease back on the very hot coastal sections, battling round to a 3.39.27 time. Very proud of that, given the conditions - but I know I'm faster ......
FETCHPOINT WAS ACE - THANKS EVERYONE!
As my mother says-i'm not very good in the heat!
Pix en France
Disappointed! Was looking for between 4.15 - 4.30 - but weather was just soooo hot. Impossible to do more.
Have been told that I can knock off 20-30 minutes for the weather so feeling a little better.
Not put off though and looking for the next one now
Cold week before
Training has been going pretty well, completed all my long runs. Should smash my PB and achieve sub 4.
Very hot and very pleased!!!
HOT. Felt good until 16, and the heat took it's toll. Suffered from there until 25 where I picked up abit. Will take that on a day like it was.
Hope to make a fun weekend of it with friends and if the course is as quick as they say it is, set a new pb!
As the Sun would say, phew what a scorcher - way to hot for PB's - my apologies to all those who bet on my and my condolences to the family of the guy who died.
My prayers for the weather were not heard apparently. Very, very hot again, although had a better time than last year. Still excellent race and wonderful city!!!
Legs decided it wasn't going to be my day!!
On for about a 3.12 but heat took its toll at the end but still absolutely dlighted with my time
1st race. Slightly disappointed that I couldn't make it all the way around without walking for a couple of miles at the end.
Turned out to be my worst running experience. Went to plan until halfway but then started suffering with the heat and a calf strain. Very nearly dropped walked most of the second half due to pain. On the plus side, spectators were brilliant and fantastic support at fetchpoint.
My first marathon and what a challenge in the heat! But a fantastic event which I survived and am now considering my second!
Far too hot...
Sorry guys N girls for losing you credits - The conditions were a nightmare and I struggled in the heat near the end.
Coz I can
I've given in to sense and pulled out!
Hip still troublesome despite mega rest / physio / NSAIDs etc.
Anyone want my number?
Think I'll try and use it as a training run - got the number so might as well - Hip still giving me jip but what the hell!
Oops! can barely walk today due to very respectable time yesterday - despite the heat and lack of 20 milers AND dodgy hip felt fab and happy enough when crossing line - now need to get a decent 4-6 month training in prior to next year!
Merry Christmas & Happy New G(rrr)
*Update Mar 10. Rats, injured. Have pulled out. Tobro is taking my entry. Ach weel! :-)G* Just entered Nov 09. Will be doing VLM as an LSR then! :-)G
The heat got to me, that was hard!
first full marathon !!!!!!!!!! wow that was hot brill race legs died in last 6 miles 10k 47.16 half 140.25 30k 226.42 1426th
Didnt make the sub 3 (again) but pleased with a 2nd best ever time given the heat
injured - not completed
Very hot, hamstring injury, ran much better than expected, but not quite the sub 4 I was after. Loved fetch point. Didn't appreciate the long walk to the buses. More frequent water stops needed on a day like that, I have a glowing red face!
First marathon so not sure what to expect. very excited though and looking forward to the race and the atmosphere.
Quite pleased, it was ridiculously hot out there but there was plenty of water and Lucozade, and the local kids had garden hoses out to spray the runners. Garmin footpod died so I had no idea what pace I was doing and kept missing mile markers, so happy that I kept it even. Fetchpoint was awesome and much needed.
anything beginning with a 3 and i can retire from marathons.....
Update. 3.42.08 extremely pleased as it was a little on the hot side
Second attempt to get a sub 5, did this as a first marathon last year in 5hrs 22mins and 10secs
Great race and delighted to go sub 4 hours!
Burnt out at 22 , god was it hot
Hot, hot, hot but coped with the heat OK I think until left thigh went at 17 miles. Gutted as I was way ahead of 5 hour pace at the time.................always next time.
Fetchpoint was AMAZING!!
Garmin time for now but it wont be much different .Got a pb so pleased with that .Went thru half way in about 1.34 ,slowed down a bit from 22 miles but held on to cross the line in 3.12 so happy with that
I'm hoping for better (cooler) weather this year, and I'm also still hoping for a run closer to 4 hours than 5. I'm setting myself the target of 4.20.
Well- another ridiculously hot day! Still, managed a PB, though not quite the 4.20 I was looking for.... next time
This was better organised a lot hotter in my book that the last edinburgh marathon. disappointed with the time but just have try next time.
Feck that was hot!!!
Hot hot hot!
Not what I wanted but still a PB
Too hot, water bladder didn't work, ipod didn't work, feet sore, almost passed out after finishing from severe deydration and sun stroke. Only good part was when Santa from Fetchpoint got me a lucozadesport and sprinted after me to give it to me. NEVER AGAIN! First and probaly last marathon!
Hooray - I finished! 23,500 starters. Very hot for the UK - sunny and at least 25/78. Plenty of water, but not enough sunscreen... Sore achilles on both legs all the way around, but fortunately I didn't have to quit. 10 mins in a queue for a toilet... Strong finish and not too bad the next day! Congrats also to Phil, who had a tough run but didn't give up. And thanks to our domestiques - David, Maria and Joseph. And hooray to the Fetchies who cheered us on at 11.5/23 - fantastic!
Very hot and sunny day. Last six miles really hard work. So glad to cross the finish line.
It was very hot.
A bit of sunstroke the day before and problems with the heat on the day reduced me to walking at times
Well this will be my first marathon if I get there, I have an injury I am trying to get shifted (knee) but have just started training (today is 27/3/10) so maybe a tad late. We'll see.& we are flying up on BA so may not even stand on the start line.
That was really hard work - very hot and I managed to lose two pacers...
Dreadful race. Cramped by 10m, lost vision on left eye at 20 and migraine came on 30minutes later!
Wow this was one scorchio marathon!!! Pleased with my time all in all. Struggled from 8 - 18 miles but found the last bit ok strangely. The walk to the baggage buses nearly killed me though!! Off for a cheeky glass/bottle of wine and to cover myself in after sun
It really hurts me to put in that time, i know im capable for 3hr 15. Going off to fast and 25 degree heat put pay to that. Was glad just to get round in the end. Cramps from 18 miles
In Training - going well ,will revise target nearer the time.@@@ started great but by 20 miles the wheels fell off , I could not cope with the heat, almost collapsed at the end. waiting for chip time ,think its aprox 3:35:50.
That was hell. I was comfortable up until about 10miles, managing a few seconds ahead of predicted pace. After that the heat just started to destroy me, and whilst vaguely on target up to half way (roughly 1.40 for the first half), I just crumbled, ending up horribly dehydrated. Rather frustrated as I don't think I made any significant tactical errors - I just can't cope with anything even moderatley warm.
I hope ive not just opened my mouth and let my belly rumble lol, but if i stick to the plan and not get carried away at the start, then i think this time is achievable, my biggest problem is the mental challenge not, the physical one, but my good friend is running with me, so thats a boost in its self ... she says lol..x
Really tough one. Very hot and very little breeze. Felt okay until about mile 19 ish. Chuffed to be under 4 hours again
Position 2648 out of 9459 runners
Mediocre run. Live and learn!
How I made it to the end I will never know. I couldn't bend my right knee from around mile 20. The heat was totally overpowering. I was bang on pace right through the split at 30k but had to walk/shuffle through the last 6 miles. A minor blip on what was a great weekend......
Found it rather hot for marathon running but pleased with run. Tremendous support at Fetchpoint on the way out and back.
V.hot day. Managed to run till 20 miles then had to walk some.
Hot, sticky, exhausting.
There We Are Then
new pb for this one....hopefully...................nice roasting in the sun got a nice sad sun tan line from me vest
I am going to run in winter or cold countries after today
he who dares
Hottest day EVER recorded in scotland for May, which did slow me dowm after 19 mile point. and sadly one person died from a heart attack.
Delighted to finish my first marathon in 3.35. Bright, sunny day, great support and superb finish at Musselburgh Race Course. 13th in my category.
Still had an injury picked up 10 days before and suffering from pain during days leading to event. Wiped me out! Hot day but X-Bionic seemed to work. exhausted at mile 20 walked for a bit.
Pleased to get under 4 hours as the last month has been a bit of a challenge. Managed my gels/fluids much better this year, walking to take them on board so as i got them all in. Didnt hit any "walls " this year altho knee/ITB was siezing up on the second half. Thanks to Jenny and "Bert" from Portobello for keeping me going again today. Thanks to Santababy, Happy Grrr et al too for the encouragement and soaking at the Fetchpoint. A good day all told. ;O) !
a wee jog, in the party mood!
Very Hot, no shade. Good half marathon but hit the wall at 15M and did not recover until 20M. Very dissappointing.
Down hill then flat but just to hot. Could do with starting earlier.
Bloody hot & sunny!!!!!!!
a huge pb
far too hot. prep terrible mentally and physically. ran well till 20miles
crashed after seeing back loop.
disliked out and back course by east coast.
Not bad considering lack of training and 30 degree temperature on the day. Went through 20 miles in 2hr 34min and then the dreaded cramp set in.......hardest 6 miles I've run in my life!!
1st ever marathon, enjoyed it but it was very hot
It was so damned hot!!
Very hot day, 1st 19 mile were ok, but when you turn round at the estates to head back down the road, you can see where you need to get to and it is both mentally challenging aswell as physically demanding to turn out those extra 7 miles. Also you pass the final leg of the relay team who join you whilst you are drained and they seem so fresh... they help you keep going
Too hot!! Fine till 20miles then the heat really hit me
Too hot for good timing
First ever marathon and it was an absolute scorcher! Temperatures were in the region of 27-30 degrees Celcius.
Chas born to run!
Smashed the Guinness World Record for Bananaman Costume, took 1m 21 of current best. lol
Hotest day of the year, struggled and found this very, very hard
