tore a muscle in my calf at 3.5 miles.....ouch. that was the end of my race. still glad I went and hope to be back next year
fantastic experience and even got on the telly!
I was on course for a PB the whole way round, but I did find the course difficult. It was my third GNR and knew what to expect but those long drags on the duel carriageway do take it out of you - not to mention dodging around people most of the way. Still, it's a great day and I might do it again one day.

Thought this would be one to do just for the experience, but an unexpecte PB into the bargain - Wooohoooo!!!
Enjoyed this for the great atmosphere but was quite frustrated at not being able to run at my normal pace because of all the crowds, for the first time ever felt like I could have knocked out a few more miles at the finish! Would definately do it again but start in a faster pen.

fell off fence 1 hour before run while going for a wee, bruised ribs, still on painkillers 1 week later, shouldn't have run.
disappointed with time,didnt help getting tripped at 11miles off an idiot cutting everyone up when running from one side of the road to the other for a piece of orange....must have let some idiots do the run this year

Close, but no cigar! Still a PB though.
Hadn't ran in 3 weeks due to an achilles injury - still happy to have done under 2 hours
Bad running day for me indeed, not so good start and pace crippling stich at 9 Miles, no PB today. 1st time over this course, great support (thanks Lisrun) and some mysterious others around the course who knew my name (spooky). Well done Northernrunner and Rununman, excellent runs guys. Happy with 124th all considered, will I be back next year?
I did it in 1:59:57 last year, and am determined to beat that. If I do that will be 3 consecutive PB's in this race.
On the morning didn't think I was even going to manage to hit 2.05 as had v bad belly from night before. Had to dose myself up with immodium. (Nice) Spent most of the night awake coughing, and even pulled a muscle in my back from coughing so hard. Set off on the run, and did the first mile in 8.29 which shocked me and made me think I'd set off far too fast. But when I did the 2nd mile in 8.34 and just felt like I was coasting I thought I'd just stay at roughly that same pace and see what happened. I kept thinking that the next mile would bring disaster, and that my legs would start to seize up but it never happened. In the last mile I realised I might be able to do it in 1.55 so decided to push it then. Legs felt fine at the end and I realise that I could easily have done under 1.55 if I had noticed how good I was actually feeling during the run! (N.B. Pee stop during the 4th mile) Anyway, I was well chuffed with this as I was feeling like crap when I lined up at the start. Whoo hoo! 3rd consecutive PB in the GNR. What next year? 1:50?
I'm planning this one well in advance so I ought to be able to beat last years time.
Another pb - hope I can keep this improvement going for a while longer (this despite starting pretty near the back in the green zone thus giving me the rare pleasure of overtaking vast swathes of 'athletes' with implausibly orange numbers on their chests). The GNR: the original and one of the best.
Started in Pen C - with about 8,000 people in front of me! High-fived Tony Blair just before the start line and I was off. First mile - 6.53 which frightened me as I was expecting it to be slow and I was hoping for a time of 1.35-1.40 and this was too quick. Felt ok though - and just kept going at that pace (or faster!) and ended up with 1.29.35. Was really surprised that I was 70th over 40 bloke. Loved the race. Great atmosphere and excellent prganisation (apart from the hour and a half queue for a Metro in South Shields).
Would have got sub 2 hours but for people getting in the way.
This will be the first time I would like to do it in 2hrs 30 but have to wait and see

Absolutely over the moon all came to gether on the day. 2 minute PB! after the run I have been having over the last few weeks illness etc this makes up for it all. Getting closer and closer to sub 1:40
Running for Magic Moments (charity that helps autistic kids and their families). UPDATE: good fun, wasn't as quick as I'd hoped but enjoyed it anyway.
The weather came good and the race went better than I hoped - so that in the end I was disappointed not to have beaten my time from two years ago. Getting out of South Shields was easier too - and Deb even got to see me crossing the Tyne Bridge. Will be back next year, but after that who knows?

Dodgy knee in 2007 meant I couldn't seek my revenge so...
(11 week training gap then with 7 weeks to go I have started training again so sub 2 hrs doesn't seem likely)
Woohoo! Beat 2 hrs and beat my PB. Was in the orange zone this year and found it a lot easier not having to weave through the crowds. Most people around me were running around the same pace so a lot easier. The sun coming out was good for the spectators but made it hard work. Found out I got into the FLM on Friday so all I have to do is turn round and do the same again....

Had a cracking race, really enjoyed myself, managed to say hi to a fair few folks on the way round, and waltzed into a brand new pb by over 2 mins - your credits were safe with me

Love this race.It'll be third time too.
This was a really tough, crowded and noisey race. And they got my time badly wrong. My Garmin gave me a PB for which I worked extremely hard. I started in Zone C which was just right and ran for Macmillan Cancer Support. Given the injury I was hoping just to finish. Getting a PB is a real boost to my recovery.
17 minutes quicker than last year so quite happy - would have liked to be closer to 2.15 but hey- ho there's always next year! Boy were we lucky with the weather or what, couldn't believe how good it was compared to Saturday and I really enjoyed this race which is not something I've been able to say a lot just lately - roll on next year!

Enjoyed yesterday but was a bit too overcrowded to get into a decent pace (what did I expect?! 52,000 runners!). Congrats to all those who did get PBs, I think that's a stunning achievement on this race! Not my best, not my worst time ... decidedly average for me!! I think I'll blame having just done a marathon 3 weeks ago for my leaden legs after 10k distance (wonder how long I can use that excuse for!).
What a terrific atmosphere though ... and I think we had the best weather in the country yesterday!! How lucky were we?!!
this is the one i've been training for. my 1st hm. really starting to get nervous about it now lol
raising money for the firefighters charity and I'm doing the race in full kit with a set on my back so if I can get under 2 and a half hours I'll be delighted.
Managed to get a sponsored place through work. I'd like to finish under 2 hours. Revised as I have recently seen the topography of the race...a bit hillier than I'd thought.
Enjoyed my first GNR.. but lost my energy at 10th mile and slowed a little.. was hoping for 1 hour 40... still... an enjoyable race really.
first time half marathon
This race is always great but always harder than i remember. Those little inclines take it out of you and they seem to come at the worst time. Very happy with result (all things considered). just checked the results and i finished Top 100 and 6th V40. Good to see some fetchies at various points - NorthernRunner, Nochickenstrip and thanks for shouts of encouragment from fetchpoint (Lisrun and crew).
Another amazingly uplifting occasion.
a little more confident now I have run 10 miles but my god it was hard! Would love to come in under 3 hours and for a fat old bird I don't think thats too bad. All you fast wipper snappers just get me a drink in when you finish!

really sore left calf and hurt my back b4 start..d'oh!! ran all the way..ecstatic about that..it was a huge mental battle..very tired after 8 mile but i did it..had a lot of rough spells but fought my way thro it..100% fit nex year and i'll get sub 1hr 40..

Played Hockey the day before (hard game), so struggled with cramp from 4.5miles. Shame as I was on for a decent 1.40ish time.
Great weather, very warm in fact, had to stop for the loo and found the hills longer than last year..
Got in through the ballot, very pleased.
My best experience of the Great North Run yet even if a little warm! Bring on 2009

Good run loads of people having to try and dodge , and also stopped for a little kiss and cuddle with wife so pleased with this time
Good fun and was happy with my time. Couldn't believe the amount of people there and started in Zone G so was quite far back. Managed to weave through the crowds quite well and only walked for about 10 seconds of the whole thing (at top of the john reid rd of course) - then saw Battlecat just ahead so ran in to the finish with her. Didn't see many Fetch tops about but saw the Fetchpoint - thanks for the cheering guys & gals!!!
This will be my FIRST time at the GREAT NORTH RUN , l just want to finish safely not going to beat myself up on time. Coming back with a MEDAL will make me very happy, coming back with a medal and a decent time will make me happy. WINNING this race will make me HAPPY. Doesn't take a lot to make me happy. It really is a GREAT RUN , reminded me of the London Marathon , lots of runners and lots of supporters along the route , got tripped up a few times because of so many runners but l was fine and the weather turned out okay too.
Wow - that felt hard! I did it last year but completely forgot about all those hills which just keep on coming, and coming. I felt pretty fine overall but miles 10-12 took it out of me and the last 1.1 mile killed me!
However, I've only been running twice a week on average and I still managed to knock 5 minutes of last years time and so got a new PB - get in!
I am cursed I'm sure. With honesty my preperation for the race was not the best, I have been niggled with MTSS until September when I was given the Green light to resume training. I went into the morning with a doubt in my mind regarding the inside of my right calf which just didn't feel right, warmed up and plenty of deep heat. Set off at 8.45 min miles, kept this pace until mile 6 when I felt 'something' in my right calf, I tried to put it out of my mind until mile 7 when it felt like I had been stabbed in the leg, I pulled over and stretched for a minute or so and tried to continue, the pain was managable but only at 10 minute miles, I didn't want to pull out of the race so kept going taking baby steps, managed to make it onto the coast, by this time I knew my sub 2 hr was out of the window, kept going and even managed to speed up a bit and finish in 2 hrs 04 mins, 28 seconds. I'm disappointed but at least I have next year to crack 2 hours, if I can stay injury free. Sorry to those who bet on me, I won't let you down next year !!
1st HM. Got place in the ballot, but running for leukaemia research and heart of kent hospice, hoping to be inside 2hrs...
I "hope" to do this for the last time (said that last year). Finding it difficult to improve on times and also to get the training in.
Hard work at 21 weeks pregnant after berlin marathon last week as well!will go back next year with revenge!!

Running in aid of Kidney Research again after a fab time at Edinburgh Hairy Haggis Relay DOH! If only I hadn't stopped for that wee! Still had a brilliant time, if a bit surreal, but finished feeling fit and strong and very happy
late to start, got boxed in with slower runners, nice day, had a good run !!
died at 12 this time - will I ever get to the start line fit?
was dress as nurse and carrying bucket of money, so i wont count this time lol
its not the nicest of courses but i still keep doing it, got to start right at the front this year and warm up a bit with rununman. the good start paid off as at the 10k mark i had a new pb of 35:10 and ended up beating the time i set myself by over 2 minutes and finishing in 70th position. thank you for the support and cheer at fetchpoint.
Sorry to all that bet on me, i was a little off my predicted time! Yet another good run on this course, seem to get a p/b every outing here. Disappointed to get stuck in the crowds at the start and finally had to stop for a pee at about 8 mile but all in all not to bad an amble.

Struggled to finish - shin splints and blisters made it very hard work!
Great day but a horrible race for me. Had stomach pains the week before. When running down to the start of the race I had shooting pains up my side. Hit 10k at 52 mins however after that got burning pains in my back and stomach making it hard even to walk. 4 painkillers, 6 first aid stops, 5 ice packs later I stumbled accross the line in double my expected time. Time splits show that it took me 1h 05 mins to get from the 10 to 15k mark!!!I was really disappointed and only finished it for my charity. Stomach pains continued. Now on Thursday I am off work as was vomiting blood in the early hours of yesterday. Am going back to the docs tomorrow after blood tests to find out what is irritating my guts - could be gallstones. Have not eaten for a day and a half and just generally feeling drowsy and done in. What an end to my running year but probably explains my poor performance!The banter and costumes were first class though! Will definately be doing it again next year!
My 2nd half marathon..would love to get under two hours but very much doubt it.
My calf strain reared its ugly head within the first mile so the first few miles were spent taking this easy, stopping, stretching the calf and after that I just resigned myself to enjoying the sunshine and soaking in the atmosphere.
It was a glorious day with the only downside the 6 and a half hours it took to drive all the way back to London. I cherished the bottle of Newcastle Brown I managed just before setting back to London

Can't believe I am actually going to attempt this! My first half marathon and really excited and nervous at the same time. Running for the British Heart Foundation so hopefully that will help get me through thoses miles and ease the pain!! Number came through the post and I am in zone B which looks good for a PB race as it shouldnt be so crowded after a couple of miles. Also training is going well so BRING IT ON.. WOW what a day a new PB by 25 MINUTES
Heading back to the land of my birth (Sunderland) for my 28th GNR.
Will be running for LEUKAEMIA RESEARCH.

UPDATE - Got to 8 miles with no problems, then just ran out of steam. Jog/walked the rest. Just found my official time on the GNR website, beat my Bristol Half time by 21 secs!!
Would like to do this in sub 1.30 but not sure on fitness or training
All came together today. Tough course as usual but a good day for running and the fantastic support kept the spirits up all the way. Soooo happy.
Loved it at my first half attempt and will be back next year and the next etc etc

Absolutely up for this, I know its likely to be "crowded" but I'm so sure I can knock 10 mins off of my previous PB. Just going to go for it, feel the pain and see what happens!
Hoping to get a good start and beat last years time. One of these years i will run well in this one. Number 2483 and i'm running for Marie Curie Cancer Care. !!!!!! Nearly got under 83min but quite pleased as i was ill last night with sickness and headache. At 5 oclock this morning i wasn't going to do it but had raised quite a bit in sponsorship so dragged myself out of bed. Thank goodness i improved a lot before start time and ran ok till the last 2 miles where i ran out of steam a bit. Still 45sec better than last year and 100 places higher, 192nd and 9th V45. Had a wonderful massage afterwards in the Marie Curie hospitality tent. Eased the legs loads.
Had not planned to do this but got the chance of a place. Not done nearly enough long runs but it will be usefull to run it before the Carlisle Half M. Hip got progressively worse as race went on & had to stop & walk @ 9 & half miles, then just jogged slowly to end
Very happy with pb time of 1.55.40, I must have been in roughly the right area as I only got held up twice. Atmosphere last couple of miles kept me going when I was starting to struggle.
Stomach pain all the way through (not stitch) followed by very 'unsettled' couple of hours. Also, in a pen too far back and had to work around people for most of race - not ideal. Overall pretty pleases given where I was mid-June when I took up running and weighed 2 stone more that I do now.
Plenty of time to come off of this though.
do this every year - just a bit of fun with my sister. The only time in the year she runs outside!**was reasonably pleased with this - slow start and no warm up plus a loo stop at 4.5 miles. Energy crisis at 8 miles but pleased overall with a solid reintroduction to half - marathon distance**

First time - really pleased with my time (and that included a 3 min wee stop)
Just ran today with my brother as a nice easy training run. Enjoyed it very much and will enter next year with a view to really going for it.
This will be my 6th GNR but haven't done enough long miles! Just looking to enjoy the run & atmosphere.

Better than expecetd, I beat my target of 2h30m so really pleased for my 1st half marathon. It started really well but 10 miles on was hard work, thank heavens for Queen and "don't stop me now" at the 10 mile mark, it really helped. The orgainsation was great, it was agreat day out.
Having not run for two years (the last being GNR 2006) and having been injured for even longer than that, my only target was just to get round the course in any time.
I probably only ran about 10 - 20% of the race. It's a lot harder than it was two years ago but I've gained nearly three stone in that time.
Most pleasing of all, I've had no reaction from my dodgy left ankle since the race finished. I'm hoping I can actually start training again... fingers crossed!
Excellent acheivment for me, the morning of the race I altered my prediction to 1hr30 so delighted to make it under 1hr25!!

Had to stop for a massive wee stop!!! If I hadnt of stopped, would have been likely to have been my half marathon PB - top day!
Felt good until about 8 and a half miles. Everything was hurting after that.
Was going well until the 7 mile point when toes on both feet went numb and then started to give me mega pain, up to this point had hoped to at least do as well as last year 02:26:33 but will be back next year and hope to get under the 02:30.
Just recovered from a foot injury and didn't think I'd make it with so little training but really pleased with my result. Inspired to do more races and train over winter.
just pleased to get round, what a brilliant experience, will apply again next year.
Knee injury gave me problems in second half of race - hurt knee (left) a couple of weeks earlier in training; had rested up & used knee support for GNR. Started off fine, but gradually got worse & worse. When I'd stopped, I could hardly walk - took a month rest to sort itself out afterward
(But at least I beat last years time of 2hr 01 min 29 sec !!
Despite having a heavy cold the week prior to the race, I felt good at the start and really enjoyed the race. Managed to keep going at 5:12 Km pace. Lovely weather made for an enjoyable race.

hmph, had a cold and it REALLY took it out of me. Disappointing time. Had one "celebratory"drink in SShields then metro'd back home, did a spinning session which didnt really cheer me up either. Hmph!
