Blister Coach said to do this instead of the 1500m because I would still be tired from Lanzarote last week, and he was right. There were only 5 of us in the race plus one young lady who joined us because no-one else turned up for the ladies race. There were 2 sub 9 guys, so I let them go then there was Pete from Bristol AC who would be running around the same time as me and another guy who I didn't know. We started and I went off too quick, first lap was in 75 seconds (5 minute mile pace) and I was currently in 3rd place...but it all went downhill from here. The next few laps I slowed and after about 3 laps the other guy went past and I tried to stay with him, it lasted about 100m then he moved away and I couldn't get my legs moving to keep up, they felt flat and heavy. It was quite windy too which slowed us on the 100m straights and it was warm too (about 19 degrees) but the heat didn't bother me. I went through the first mile in about 5:25, so I slowed a fair bit for the last 3 or so laps. Pete soon caught me and went past I tried to react (accidently tripping him in the process!) but couldn't stay with him. I just held on for the final 2 laps and finished in last place (apart from the girl) in a slow time of 10:31, Pete did 10:21 and the other guy did 10:17 so I wasn't miles away in the end. The winner did 9:12 which was a good time considering he did the 800m before plus it was windy. Me and Pete were both disappointed with our times but this was my first track race of the season plus I have these factors (or excuses!) to consider: 1) I'm still recovering from Lanzarote plus a heavy cold. 2) I started too quick, probably could have stayed with Pete if I started slower. 3) It was windy, but that probably only added about 10 seconds to my time. I recon I should be able to do about 10 minutes if I was fresher. TeamBath AC, Somer AC, Walton AC 9:51 10:28 10:00 10:31 71.33
