Hi ,

Please consider enabling ads for our website, or making a voluntary donation. If you donate, I can turn off the ads for you for a period of time. Average donations are about £3.50 per month, so a tenner would give you three months ad free.

What a day ! Really really enjoyed the race, best run I have had on the course. Brilliant weather and topped off by the Red Arrows. Superb.
IanRunner
My first GNR and really enjoyed it. felt the pace at 11 miles but there was only two to go after that!
craigt
didn't do much training in the last month due to my son being in Hospital. Didn't have high hopes time wise, but very happy with result.
Bimblebelle
Due to alot of niggling injuries, I will be happy just to finish this one on the same day as I started!!
Kung Fu Grip
Because of back problems thought I would have to walk whole distance, however managed to run-walk.
Raisty Raist
Pain and suffering
Ravanelli
I Love this Race. Will not try for a time, but will just enjoy it.
Was doing well last year until had half a glass of lager at about 10 miles, (well, it was offered). Also enjoyed a pint and chip butty in the marque at the end of race.
UPDATE : Fantastic day. My slowest half marathon but the most enjoyable.
Blagged everything I could on the way round inc:
Water, lucozade, Ice pops, jellies, Chocolate biscuits, (Isotonic) Beer, oranjes.
Slap the hands of the kids who squirted me with water, slap the hand of Elvis
and ran all the way with my mates, we even slowed at the end to cross the
line with a Gorilla in a wheel chair (shamefull attempt at getting on TV).
Brilliant Day
Running Beard
Much, much slower than last year - due to very low training mileage and nothing like this distance (due to work commitments) but kept it under 2 hours which I would have been happy with at the start
Cormorant
Well, I got away with it. This was a new personal worst and the last 3 miles were really hard but I'd done so little training after pulling a hamstring in the summer that I was pleased to finish and to come in under 2 hours. By the evening my calf muscles felt like you could pluck a tune on them. It's a well-organized event and it was great to have a weekend in Newcastle and to see old friends too, so we'll be back.
sanddancer
Pulled out through injury.
Lincsfella
what a fab day..... again. however. sorry if you betted i did try and cant believe i failed by 4 seconds. thouroughly enjoyed it, and whilst i keep saying this is my last one....... i might be back next year :o)
Slow Sam
Brilliant, great course, not as hilly as I expected slight panic when my garmin lost its connection under the underpass but used it to pace me rather than for the time. On the list to do next year again!!
MartinCunningham
Would be lovely to dip under the 1'40 time... not sure though UPDATE: I think I underestimated this race after the IOW 1/2M in August and after a slow start found it difficult to achieve a steady pace. Huge crowds made a big difference and superb organisation of course made it a memorable experience ... oh and so did GNER.. running dirty and over crowded trains which meant sitting on the floor for three hours was crappy end to a great day!
Farby
Time was worse than New Forest 2 weeks ago, but it felt a whole lot better. So now, to GER or not to GER? That is most definitely the question....
philbo
Not done the distance for a while , but i think Ive got enough miles in the tank to be OK , its never going to be a PB on this course but i am looking to beat last years time. *** UPDATE *** Very happy with the race, stuck with what id planned , pace, and took my gels & drinks at the miles that i thought would see me through and they did, got a touch warm towards the end but still enjoyed it , well organised again back next year.
Metal Martin
Very happy with the result - 'twas also a great event.
Vicki: Graceless Whippet
Well - your credits were indeed safe with me! Had a cracking race. I didn't take off like a loon either. Had a really comfortable race - I'd definately wear the wings again - I didn't get more than 10yds without someone shouting "Well done fairy!" Was a really excellent atmosphere. The music on the John Reid road was really good - just when you needed a boost you had 800m of dance music to get you going. Didn't struggle at all up the hills, just kept a nice even pace, didn't hit my target time, but I did knock two and a half minutes off my pb! Absolutely over the moon. Got interviewed by Look North & The Shields Gazette at the finish - picked up by my dad, and whisked off to my aunt & uncles for a nice cup of tea - how British *grins*
DaveH
So. Many. People.
Miss Sweden
I got a PB last year, and am hoping to shave more time off this year. However, it's only January, so a lot can happen in 8 months.....
3 weeks to go and I'm changing my prediction. This will only be 3 weeks before my marathon. I don't think I'm going to try too hard with this, just take it as a training run...maybe.

On race day I was actually aiming for under 2 hours, and I only just made it! Really enjoyed the run. It was a bit warm, though. Well chuffed with my time.
Badger
Aiming to pace a friend to 2 hours, so no betting on me, it'll be points down the drain!
Result: got him round in 2.08.26 and he ran every foot of the way and is delighted.
CD
Great experience. My 40th half marathon and one to remember.
Is@@c
First time below 90 mins - yay !
Pegg
A tough one - but that's what you get when you don't train for two months and run with a sore foot! Had a ball though, running with Em, Allie and Farby.

It's great to be back running again though, and I can't wait for the next one!
Beejay
Running with Snoozi and hoping to get her round in about 2.10, its only 1 week before Loch Ness Marathon.
stoat
First GNR and only second ever half so no idea on time but am soooo looking forward to it!
Snoo
Missed out on this one last year because of injury during Robin Hood... As long as I don't get injured again, I'm odds on for a PB!***UPDATE*** As Beej is running with me, I expect to PB (especially as I did Robin Hood in 2:21 yesterday and it felt fairly easy)...however, would not be so bold as to predict sub 10m/m as Beej has above! ***UPDATE*** I was right- sub 2:15...nice :o) Hurt though!
Billy Idle
Cant believe i actually got in.looking forward to the atmosphere and getting in under 1:55
Lycra Hurricane
A great day and a tantalisingly OK time.Job done, good prep for the GER, and (injuries permitting) I should be ready for a good time
hatstand
Hillier and much busier than where I set my pb.
emandbelle
no idea really how long this will take. Hoping for less than 2 hours 40. Dependant on crowds etc.
FaeryImp
A really fab time was had by me.Bettered last years time...for once Imp is a happy one.
kstuart
Not sure if i can beat my PB as there are a lot of runners on this run. Will also be up bliddy early to drive over from Carlisle so perhaps not ideal prepartion. Although there will be loads of time to digest a jumbo portion of porridge before i leave ;) If you want to bet feel free but i would say it could be fairly risky. I will off course bet on myself for motivational reasons. Target pace would be 9:30 min miles. Depending on pacing groups and my abiity to get close to them at the start i think i'll have a crack at sub 2 hours for this. If its 9 min miling pacing i'll hang on as long as possible, if its a 2 hour pace group i'd expect them to be ahead of me at the start so i'll aim to catch up with them and if capable pull away in the last mile or so. race UPDATE: Far to many people in the way to get going at the pace i needed but a time of 2:09 was only a little over 3 mins slower than my PB and i would say this race would add at least 5 mins if not 10 to a PB time due to the number of runners
ChrisDig
Sorry to everyone who bet on me - missed PB by 6 seconds . was bang on target for 1.25 at 12 miles but got cramp (happened a few times over last 2 months) - if it wasn't for the crowd i think i would have stopped to stretch ....aahhhh well , sure i'll get it next half marathon....well done to everyone else who got PB's.
Lisrun
Last year I was injured and walked all the way - a strange experience. Has to be better this year ! My 10th GNR. *Update* My calf became very sore after 1m so I had to slow down, but I made it round without my calf giving up completely
Longy
Fuck me, a Great North PB, even with dodgey upper Hams
makkem
Looking forward to my 27th Great North Run.
Been allocated a number in Zone A, as a result of my having completed every previous GNR to date, so I'm behind the Emmerdale cast and the other Z-list celebrities.

Managed to beat my time from the Bristol Half 3 weeks ago, though still found it heavy going in places.
stoxy
2:10 would be nice but doesnt really matter! Atmosphere is unbeatable.
AllyB
Pleased with my time considering I had to make an emergency toilet stop right after I started and then had to make my way back through the crowds, which weren't as bad as I feared. Went through 10 miles in 71 minutes which beat my previous best 10 mile time by 1 min 30. Great atmosphere and and a new PB by about 18 minutes or so.
GettingThere
Best GNR time by over 17 minutes - so well chuffed
RununMan
Just received number today, 4503 so only a few thousand soap starts to pass!!!
Aim for Sub1.22 UPDATE; Crowds and atmosphere good as ever. Happy enough but thought I had a chance to go Sub80, cannot believe I got 80mins dead. Did not run that well, went off too fast, it was warm and tough at times. 1 sec improvement required!!! Oh and I was overtaken by guy in basque and stockings ... well played fella!!!
Yano
I'm running this for Alzheimer Scotland - justgiving.com - would love to get a PB.....

Well no PB this time but I really enjoyed my first time at the GNR. The scale of it just blew me away as I walked to the start - miles and miles of runners waiting to set off! Had a bit of a cold and was feeling sick with nerves beforehand. But the reason for the time is partly because of the congested start. First 3 miles were about 8 min/miles, there was just no way through, packed in like sardines until well beyond the Tyne Bridge! Then I just relaxed and decided to enjoy the day. Didn't push too hard, high fived the kids, soaked up the sun and atmosphere. It was liberating in the end just to relax and not chase a PB. Wonderful crowds all the way, better even than the London Marathon! Quite an undulating course, more than I expected and a hot day. Over 500 quid raised for charity is the main thing today..... Postscript: 1469 out of 35833 - top 5% :)

Going back next year to do better....I loved the pain and the heartache....I raised just over £1000 for Cancer Research
Poochie
Got to the end absolutely wrecked. Depleted glycogen. Due to lack of sleep, no food and running in a dress!
Runs4beer
How did I do that!!! Certainly did not expect to PB here. But I did and I loved it!! Full report in my blog. Congratulations to all todays runners.
MattTheRat
Got a free place starting at the front, so was going to go for a PB. But I'm running Nottingham Marathon 2 weeks before, so I'll do it as a paced training run to help a friend go under 1:45. Decided to go for the PB anyway - and got it! Fantastic weekend - I'll blog all the details.
geordiegirl
My first attempt at a half marathon so no real idea at tho moment how I will do, this is what I would like to achieve.
aileen156
I have been allocated a place in Zone K. I am disappointed with this and concerned that the crowds/walkers may prevent me achieving my predicted time. However I'm going to give it my best shot, hopefully a slow start may leave me with some energy for quicker miles towards the end. I guess the main thing is to complete the course, especially to thank all those who have helped me raise money for the Breast Cancer Campaign.
***UPDATE*** I took everyone's advice and enjoyed th day. As a result I beat my predicted time!
Lizzie W
Warm & sunny. Hillier than expected! Hip achey. Actually, I hated it :-(
Rhino
Running this with Mum.
suzeedee
Was hot- started too fast. Felt rubbish afterwards- boo. Still good fun though!!
crazygal
Running with a friend, not for a PB. UPDATE: Absolutely fantastic race, ran with a friend and soaked up the atmosphere. Reached the finish and felt like I had another 10 miles left in me. Idley considering a marathon ...
DeeGee
I'm delighted, although my Garmin auto-paused in the tunnel and led me to believe at the finish that I'd beaten 2:10.

Need new targets now.
Kipper
This was my first ever race last year havign never run at all up to 8 weeks prior to the run.. Anything under 2hrs 20mins would be fantastic.
Scooba Steve
Just over a week to go and looking forward to it! 3rd time running it and hoping to improve again - even got in with a free place from Nike!! £38 saved!

Update!

Didn't quite manage the 2h10 I was aiming for but still a PB and 8min improvement on last year! Well chuffed.
Karate Chop
What an amazing run, ran like Forrest Gump all the way around. This is the furthest & fastest I've ran all year - well chuffed.
Jenko
Bit disappointed with the time. Woke up with a "bit of a snifle". Mindframe not quiet right and it was bloody hot too! Got knocked over at 4 mile drink station.
Grey Badger
A bit better than last weeks time. Perfect conditions though it did get warm towards the end. Seemed to be more people running this year. Beat last years time by over 5min but this due to better race number.
Gonzales
Not a bad time considering that i had a last minute race number which put me right at the back with all the funrunners/walkers. was very very frustrating in places. i reckon that if i'd started in the correct starting group for my ability i'd have knocked at least 10 mins off.
Battlecat
Best day ever, loved it. Not quite as fast as I'd hoped but at least I should be able to start higher up than zone h next year.
Razza
Had a great day. Was just over my target of 1:45 but at least I've shaved some time off my PB
Goffino2
On the grounds that it's hilly up North I'm guessing I'll be slower than Freck

Post race - it is hilly up North but loved every second of it!!
Swimming Is Easier
Amazing day!! Really well organised - only took me 11 mins to get through the start and the highlight was the red arrows flyng over literally as I got onto the Tyne Bridge. perfect!! I sailed through the half way stage and was on for 2 hours (much too fast for me!!) At 10 miles I was 1.37... which is a PB (yes, I was going too fast!) and then struggled to get home in the last 3 miles -- in fact the last mile must have been slow motion running I was so exhausted!
I am sooo stiff today though, can't actually drive my car!!!
Managed to get on the TV highlights show too - right at the end I walk past Jonathan Edwards interviewing a big bird, looking a bit dazed and confused!!

Will definitely keep up the running after this!!
Roxykit
Really enjoyed this year really pleased with my result!
Alf Tupper Tough of the Track
First experience of GNR. Not expecting a PB and will be happy to savour the atmosphere. *Update* What an amazing experience! Thoroughly enjoyed. Kept to a comfortable pace throughout and soaked up the atmosphere from start to finish. Fantastic memories to savour.
samsoness
First time at GNR. Been told not to go for a time at this race as too busy. Plan to enjoy the experience from start to finish! Can't wait!
rangermouse1967
This is what running is all about! On those dark and cold winter evenings it's days like todayyou need to remember. Kept to my pace all the way round was on for a sub 1.50 but must have got carried away with the atmosphere at the last mile and lost a minute somewhere. I took 9 minutes off my pb so well chuffed. Thanks to all the Fetchies who backed me it really helps.
stu8
well was a great run (bad pun) start was alot better than the last time i ran this. Also thought the crowds at the end and in general were all very supportive great cheering at the finish!!!Bad news my calf went at 3 miles (a niggle from training 2 weeks before) so for 10 miles of hobbling i'm quite pleased with the time
DanG
Second Half-Marathon. First being a 2:01:59 at Watford. Training hard this time around and optimistic for a "good" time. Updated.... Started in Zone E and my chip didnt register at the start so is assumed that you started with Elite group!!!! My unofficial time was 1:49:21 which I was made up with. Thought I was in trouble around miles 10-12 but found something in the home straight! Great event but hard to get time if you start in the wrong zone; overtaking people walking within the first 2 miles - How did they get into the front zones?!?!?!?! Certainly do again...
Rubberman
See if i can beat my PB from Dog and Hedgehog in May. Unsure if i am any faster.
UPDATE _YES !!!! Well happy with result. Position 799
Had chips and then jogged to Whitley bay from Borth Shields ferry, so 18.5 miles for day.
Hev
Great race - felt comfortable all the way round...felt as though I could have gone quicker but crowds prevented this. Didnt walk once either which is something i never thought i'd achieve!! Really good day - and thanks to Rich1974 and Grafter for their excellent company and lifts to and from Newcastle!!!
Emmie-Lou
Have only just decided to do this as a friend can't make it so using her place. Have done no training so will run-walk it!
DaveM1962
Started off well - planned to take it easy - stocked up with energy foods (two bananas and a couple of gels) - looked good at the halfway point, even on target for a PB at the ten mile point.....then got really bad cramp in my hamstrings! Really struggled after that point - especially down the hill to the seafront. I reckon I didnt drink enough hence the cramps!. It was a lot warmer than expected as well. I thought it was supposed to be cool!

Sorry about those who have lost credits!
Yorkshire Pie
This will NOT be a PB. I'm running with a team of people, and we'll be going at the speed of the slowest runner. That won't be me.
jacko
if i get a good start ie not held up good chance of pb***update***new pb by over 6 mins
tonyrich
hurt ankle pre race- think i could have completed in 2hr 4 otherwise
Lakes
This will be my 5th GNR. I'm going to run it with Fiona (Mrs Lycra Hurricane) as it's her 1st GNR.
UPDATE - Had a great time with Fiona and ran my fastest GNR time.
Polly Pocket
Brilliant day, brilliant weekend. Didn't know what to expect but it exceeded all expectations!! What a great race and venue and a PB by 6 minutes!!
Tutu Much
Wow, what a race!! Did so much better than I thought I would, knocking a nice amount off my pb, yay! It did feel like almost the whole course was on a gradual incline though, and shame the Tyne Bridge is so early on. Can't we run it the other way round?!
slug001
got issued a green number so started at the rear of the field. Thought that the traffic might have thinned out during the second half but it just got worse!!
Ands
Had to go to loo after the start! Took it easy as Chicago marathon next Sunday.
Big Daddy
Great day out
SHOPGIRL21UK
Really enjoyed this race. Great people, well organised and the sun was shining. I wasn't aiming for a PB, just to finish, and I did that, with a big huge smile!!
ZebraGirl
Not great training buuilding up to the event = not a great time! The course wasn't the most scenic, but the crowd and atmosphere was amazing. Crossed the Tyne bridge as the Red Arrows did their fly-over, and arrived at the finish when the Red Arrows were doing their display... excellent timing made the last mile fly by. Definitely a race to take part in for the crowd experience. We were well catered for on the way round with oranges, ice lollies, biscuits...
Sugarsfield
oh my gosh that was hard, can't wait to do it again though!!
Lis81
Considering my first Great North Run and haven't done much, if any training over the last few weeks due to injury, im pleased with my time.
The route was nowhere near as hilly as I was led to believe, didn't even know I was running up any hills at one point!!

Also usually struggle afterwards with awful nausea but after I'd finished went to the Macmillan tent who were giving out Greggs pasties and such, indulged in a sausage roll and mars bar and hey presto - felt tip top for the rest of the day! Can't wait for next years!
joey
this was my 1st half marathon
parkinsm2005
Struggled at 11 miles
broke 10k best time in race
Brumliz
Amazing day, bit slower than I wanted but pleased with first attempt at a half. All went extremely well to 9.5 miles when the wheels fell off and i struggled home - will learn for next time!!
rug
A good race; I was warned the hills would be hard and they were! Overall, I enjoyed it, the atmosphere was great!
SimH
Suffered a bit with the sun, got bad sunburn on shoulders. First 10 miles were fine then went a bit Pete Tong in the last 3 miles
kerb job
chuffed to bits. I entered the race with the predicted time of 1hr 30mins, but this i found was a mistake as everyone else seemed to have given a predicted time way ahead of their abilility. for the whole race i was overtaking slower runners. so to finish within 1hr 30mins was extra special. I kept up a sprint for the whole of the last mile, i'm getting better with my sprinting.
5hep
A training run for Loch Ness next week!
toepointer
After picking up what may or may not have been a fictitious niggle near my achilles at training, dns at 2 10ks I had entered and pfaffed around and thought not to do this one as was worried 13.1m on the roads would kill of my achilles totally. But decided to be brave and do it, and it was fine. In fact it felt better (properly warmed up) after the race than before. But so unfit! Not so much the achilles holding me back as the fact that I had not had a single run at other than a very slow jog, excluding speedwork sessions, since March! So felt this was the hardest, albeit the slowest, HM I had ever done, the last 3 miles, I just wanted to expire! So unfit. I HATE running this slowly, but am pleased at the benefit the long run will have given me.

bigal
best time ever for this race,pb 2 years in a row
Feathersmcgraw
Not well on the day, went out to enjoy the race. Last mile took it easy (7:00mins) and took in the atmosphere
Big Hag
Was gutted with the time tried to pace myself for a 1:50 finish to try and improve on my 1:51 PB. However, I seem to really struggle on the last 3 miles of a half marathon it seems that my energy gets zapped away. I've just got to keep on running as there will be other races.
tooslow
much better experience than last year - over the line in about 2 mins this time (12 last year) still crowded for first 2-3 miles but a lot easier than last - temp was spot on as well - ran a pretty even pace taking into account ups and downs
JillyB
Loved the atmosphere, had to stop and watch the red arrows. However, running on these roads kills your knees
hade
Great run, spent most of the time winding through people...well upto the 11th mile anyway!!
Beat 1:30 target,very pleased.
Came 510 out of 50,000ish.
true blue
Had a great start and PB for 10 mile marker of 1hr 19mins, but that last 'mountain' hurt. Long way to go from Norwich but the Red Arrows at the end were great as was the weather.
CC2 Speedy Goth
PB! And I finished in the top 1% of ladies
Haggis 2
Started at the back, witha bad back as well, i was in pen J.....i spent the whole race overtaking hence not happy with the time, i now know i have a 1:45 in me....this is fun to do but not if you are after a good time.
JovialGnome
Started slowly and got slower!
batmouse
Crap time. Got one of those pace bands and really wiosh I hadn't. Hit the wall at 8 miles and struggled from there!
Jelly Baby
Bad race. Been ill the week before but still wanted to do it. Hit the wall at mile3- not good
Hawkins
My first half marathon was run for the charity MIND. Back trouble meant a feeble training programme and a woeful effort on the day. I knew I had to sort my back out and I did in the first half of 2008.
ChrisThePuma
Done in Bertie Bloodcell - Leukaemia Care's mascot
suziedee
19 minutes faster than last year, great PB for me
sazza42
Just brilliant!
LadyBee
Nightmare, ITBS. OW.
Steve Ho
first half and was so ill prepared for it...
SuperSpeedySteven
Much better this time. I went out to enjoy it. And enjoy it i did! I would do again, but not a place to be setting PBs to be honest. There are too many runners in the wrong starting part of the A1M so you get stuck behind the buggers!
gosbag
too crowded
154 Rob
Just this once, a GNR with a finishing time i'm pleased with! Also good that i saw plenty folks i knew in SShields later for the obligatory drinking. Red Arrows, sunshine. Gd times.
Rocky Rickerby
First ever race. Didnt really take seriously. Had a burger from the food poisoning van near the start line. not ideal preperation. Great atmosphere.
TnoP
Struggled a bit
georgenick
cramp problems again at 10 miles
mohawk sop
Didn't feel good. had a cold, but still ran.
sparky paul
First time at this race
Sarah Lou
Not really sure how this is going to do - probably going to do it slowly with my mate heather
Gibster
The last of the series of eight great north runs!
gjfrosty
Had the trotts, felt very drained running on imodium!!
