PSC Well I did it…. My first half done and dusted. Pleased with myself – you better believe it!!

The planning for the day started last night, with water bottles lined up, numbers pinned to T shirts etc etc so this morning when the alarm went off at 6 (yikes) it was all easy. Early breakfast (and coffee for the thread) and a short 15 mile drive to the venue! As the whole family was running we had to be fairly structured about the morning routine…. Weather check – 22 degrees, strong winds, sunny spells.

We got there an hour early, so no queues for the loos just calmly stretched and wandered about in the sunshine. Met up with Tracey G and her family (their kids and ours were doing the fun run together) when suddenly Bobo (OH) said we should be moving to the start. Gulp…. Took up station very close to the back – everyone chatting and beeping as various gizmos were set or acquired satellites etc… Didn’t feel much like a tense race start so quickly calmed down and started chatting too…

Bobo and I had decided to run together and easily paced each other over the first two miles where it was very busy. Settled quickly into an easy 9m 30s pace and started to pass those who started too far up the field, chattering away about life/universe etc! First water at 3 miles just before a long uphill, and with the wind in our backs (God it was windy) we sped up the hill pushing out the pace and clipping off a few more folks… jinking through a private estate (with HUGE houses) we settled for the next three miles into a very easy rhythm, tucking away the odd jelly baby and having the odd slurp fro our water belts. Next water station at 6 miles – SIS Gels and bottle of water. OMG – never had a SIS gel before so thought I would give one a bash!!! Quite how I wasn’t sick on the spot I don’t know – won’t be doing that again!!

The gel knocked me a bit and miles 7, 8 and 9 were hard going. Kept running but knew the pace had dropped to 10+ min miles… By 9 miles however and more water we had settled back into the original pace and were holding our own in the group around us. A few had shot past (Bobo kindly told me they were “negative splitting so not to worry”) but we were off again.

Passing 11 and it occurred to me that I had never run that far before and for moment doubt crept in – quickly replaced with the thought that there was only 2 miles to go and that was a warm up distance before a training run. The last 2 miles were tough, HR was creeping up and I was pushing the pace as hard as my little legs would carry me – any thought of chatter at this stage was gone – monosyllabic grunts was all I could muster!

We crossed the start line together in 2 hours 5 mins 48 seconds…… fantastic.

Slightly stiff now, but I’m sure that a few beers tonight will fix that.

With PSC Junior coming 12th in his fun run it as been a totally successful day. Big thanks to the organisers/marshals on the Kent Half – a really well run race (excuse the pun).
