Ally C Dublin Marathon. Chuffed with new PB Official chip time. Excellent race which I paced to perfection for a change. All the training really paid off on a cold day in Ireland. Thanks Hal Higdon!!! RAF AC, Moray Roadrunners 2:42:46 3:07:04 3:12:00 3:07:04 65.84
Alun My first marathon, big learning curve, tired after 18 miles, absolutely shattered after 23 miles, cried my eyes out at the finish. Pity I didn't get in under 3:30, I'll save that for London next April. Resting now! Medway & Maidstone AC 3:27:15 3:35:23 3:30:00 3:35:23 59.13

DANBERT I was having a decent run for me (looking at sub 3:30) up until the 20 mile mark. At that point in the race though, i really started to feel the pinch.

That dual carriage-way bringing you back into Dublin city Centre definitely didn’t feel like a home stretch, it felt bloody brutal.

From here onwards, I was acutely aware of my feet, which felt like they were on fire. I also knew that I was slowing down. By the time I hit mile 23, down past the Hall where the race expo had been held the day before, my main aim had switched to just finishing the race without stopping.

By mile 24, despite the fact that my legs felt as though they were beginning to cramp up, I was aware for the first time in the race that I was actually passing people and this cheered me up no end!

As I passed the 25 mile marker I realised that if I could just maintain my determined plodding like shuffle a sub 3:40 finish was definitely back on the cards.

The crowd over the last mile of the course were out in thousands and being on the end of their support was quite a humbling and emotional experience.

When I passed the 26 mile marker and made the right turn to see the finish line up ahead I knew I could just nip under the 3 hour 40 minute barrier and attempted to kick for the line. 3:39:14....... get in! Rochdale Harriers & AC 3:39:14 3:39:14 3:39:59 3:39:14 59.06

Sunbed Athlete Superd course I thought.Got myself a start on the front line after some friendly chat @ the Expo to 1 of the ladies @ registration.
Did about 1 mile of jogging/strecthes then it was the off.Sat in with a group of 5 other runners after about 3 miles & was sitting steady @ 5:41 pace right up to halfway.Went through 10k in 35:15,then halfway in 1.14:42 so was sitting pretty for a PB or my target of a sub 2.30.Hit 30k in 1.47:01 by which time the right ankle was worse & getting worse by every step I took.Had a niggle but thought thats all it was & ran with it strapped for precaution only but going through 20 mile in 2.02 there was still a chance of getting in a good time in the 2.30 - 2.40 area but totally died from there on in.As soon as I got over the line my legs just buckled from underneath me & theres was nothing I could do.2 big stewards got me in time before I hit the tarmac & it was into a wheelchair & straight to the mediacl Area where I was asessed by a Doctor then rushed to St James hospital with hyperthermic conditions.Thats 4 out of the 5 marathons ive done ive ended up this way.Its all to do with the immune system shutting down straight away & your body not being able to cope with a sudden change of tempature.Got out of A&E 2/3 hours later after the Doctor was happy that my body temp had risen as it was just 33.4 when I got to A&E.With a resting heart rate of 32 - 35 he was also happy as he knew that was a resting heart rate of a fit person.Back to the apartment then out on the town with the other 2 guys that ran. They got 3.29 & 3.42 & they were over the moon so it celebration time for them which let me forget my day for a while.
Didnt get a goody-bag but thought the organising/stewarding/course was spot on.Might have to forget about doing LNM next year & come over to the Emerald Isle again as you guys are FANTASTIC!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Cambuslang Harriers, Scottish Veteran Harriers Club 2:27:20 2:42:47 2:42:47 76.04

Ticketyboo PB by 17 mins. Enjoyed the race and happy with my time considering the amount of running missed through injury which I replaced with cycling. The wheels came off a bit over the last 10k which was to be expected as I had not done a proper long run in almost 2 months. WeebleNana First time marathon! Aim: to finish safely. No idea of time so far. Update: Well, I did it. My left foot and calf 'went' at around 10 miles! I did loads of walking from the halfway point, so was pleased to finish! Main problem was the cold - I didn't realise it would be so cold and should have worn my leggings rather than knee length capris. That wind was biting - eek! never mind - I've now got the medal/shirt and feel fab! I can even get up and down the stairs, lol. Would really recommend this as a first marathon.
