Plussing As Which Warning! this is going to be long and boring!
Decided to run this as I'd had such a miserable time in the heat of London and I wanted a rematch - me v the mara! Not as well prepared as I was in April but I'd managed a number of long runs (in amongst all the short summer time races) so was going to give it best shot. Day dawned - bit windy, but cloudy and cool - phew! Headed out steadily and got a wake-up call around mile 3 when Phil and Gail came flying past - time to see what I could do. Really enjoyed the first half, running with a couple of guys - we started reeling runners in from about 9 miles or so and then we hit the half mara runners which made it seem busy all of a sudden! Around this point the sun came out and started baking down. Had a bit of a panic but the pace kept strong and we started weaving in and out of the halfers. Bad spot about 14 when the 2 guys started slipping away but kept with them and with about 9 to go one guy dropped off. Weather was not great as the sun was hot and the wind had picked up but still felt like i was going well. Then I managed to go sprawling face first on the pavement with about 7 to go. Cut knees and hands but picked up and brushed off by a couple of very nice halfers and carried on. This shook me up a bit and I struggled a bit for the next few miles as I found myself alone. Thankfully the route was along shady country lanes so I revived a bit and kept on plodding. Last mile or so were the usual torture where brain is telling legs to stop and you're using every fibre of will power to NOT let that happen. Pretty slow going, then I heard the loudspeakers in the park and knew I was close. Into the park and up the home straight to hear them announcing the arrival of the 2nd lady - and it was me! Chuffed to bits! Very wobbly legs when they finally stopped running and rather covered in blood from my pavement encounter. Cleaned up by a lovely red cross bloke but he refused to dig the grit out of my knee! Got a lovely silver medal for 2nd place and gold for 1st F35. Carnegie won the ladies team prize too! Result! SueW I hope! : Update: No joy! ran well till about 17 miles when I went off the boil. Took a gel earlier than planned and got back into it only to be struck by calf cramp at about mile 22. Ended up walking nearly all of the last 4 miles. Scunnered1 Carnegie Harriers 3:56:27 3:56:27 3:59:59 4:21:40 54.49
Ultracat no predictions but hoping for a PB. Sorry to those who bet on me. Started off fine and was doing 10 min miling until 19 miles and then left toe was hurting alot after a long downhill, so walked to ease it off and then race plan went out the window and run/walked the last few miles. Strong headwind last 5 miles didn't help as did the bright sunshine 90 mins into the marathon. Left big toenail came off 2 weeks ago and now has a big blister on the area, not nice.
