About Me
It was the Nike 10k in Kew Gardens in 2001 that first got me into running. I did a reasonable 49minutes although that was down to running with a more experienced running friend who dragged me along. I swore after that I wouldn't do anything longer than a 10k. A year later I did my first half-marathon, Windsor. I swore I would never do anything longer than that, let alone a marathon. A year later, I did the 2003 London Marathon in a time of 4hrs 26. I swore I wouldnt do another marathon again. I did the Rome Marathon in 2004 and then the New York Marathon in 2005. I'm never swearing to not do something again

Circuits of the old bike track near the school brook. Last split Couch to 5k run, 2 x 10 min run, 2 x 5 min walk and one 3 min walk. Hip is still twinging, but no pain no gain?!

Mile End station to Work. Freezing morning, forced to walk due to no overground.

Walk home from Ollie's after bringing in the New Year. Baltic cold!
![]() |
Walk to work from Mile End due to no overground. Another bitterly cold morning, thankfully it was at least dry. Had an awful nights sleep, so quite tired as well but at least the left hip wasn't playing up. Not sure why I couldn't sleep, maybe too many orange and mint clubs at work the day before! Lots of negative thinking. Must focus on positives.

After 2 long shifts, I now have 5 days off and I was pleasantly surprised by my motivation this morning as I also began my press up challenge. Freezing cold day but pleased with my left hip not niggling too much and I made steady progress.

Arms are aching from the pressups! I really didn't fancy this, but once I'd done my warm up walk, I settled into a steady rhythm and was thankfully not required to re-adjust for the left hip.

Another day, another lockdown. However, I've been impressed with my motivation during these bitterly cold and lonesome days. This morning, I finally tidied up the spare bedroom. This is after an early awakening which found me in a dreary mood and for a sec I thought I might just undo all the recent good work and stay in bed. But I didn't. I've also rediscovered my reading mojo and power read through Disgrace by JM Coetzee, a reccomendation from the unofficial book thread on Fetch. My second completed book already this year and its looking like reading could define.
The run itself was pleasing, my left hip did not influence my gait but I nevertheless too it easy but really proud of my achievements as I finish week 7 of the couch to 5k with a 25 minute run in between 2 five minute walks. The pressups hurt but I'm kinda working my way through them. ![]() |
Day one of week 8 Couch to 5k. 5 min walk, 28 min run and 5 min walk. As I approached Preston Road from Forty Avenue, the hip started to tweak and I had to slow down and was worried that this was it, here comes the inevitable injury. I took it really easy for a few minutes and thankfully the pain subsided and I was able to get into my normal flow. Pleased to have gone 28 mins running straight through. It had been a lethargic morning caused by staying up late last night till about 1.30am to finish The Salt Path book which I really enjoyed. I woke up early for some reason, at 7am and decided to have breakfast and then again retired to bed to start on yet another book, High Rise. I eventually dozed off again and awoke at 10am to continue with the book. Pleased with my progress on the fitness and reading aspects of life right now!

Disappointingly but perhaps not surprisingly, my left hip decided not to behave today and I had to slow down and take things very easy. Despite this, I'm proud to have run 5 consecutive days to really kick start my new year and my goal of 500 miles.

Yesterday I was too lethargic after 2 long shifts to bother to run. The sight of a sprinkling of snow also fuelled my excuses. So after 3 days of inactivity, I forced myself out and ended up with a good effort, the hip behaving, and I maintained a steady pace. Add to that 20 proper pressups and a good workout all in all.

Longest run for some time as I begin Couch to 5k's last week, Week 9, 5 min walk, 30 min run, 5 min walk. I took it very, very easy as the left hip threatened to twinge and besides, I want to gradually build up my stamina. I wasn't tired by the end of it so probably could have pushed a bit harder but it was a drizzly day with big puddles on the pavement so didn't really feel like zipping past. Pleasing progress with the pressups too, managing to do 4 sets of 5 for the first time ever.

20 press-ups are getting more comfortable in reps of 5 so I added crunches today, managed 6 and it affected my press-up ability. Still, am pleased with my progress. I took this run very very easy, mindful of the left hip which continues to whine. Jogged effortlessly for 41 mins, the penultimate couch to 5 k.

My final couch to 5k. After 2 days of inactivity, feeling lethargic and sleepy, I was pleased to get out today. I took it very easy again, being kind to the hip but pleasingly able to maintain a comfortable gait. So from now on, no more Jo Whiley in my ear and a chance to go further and go harder...

Change of breakfast. I had mornflake superfast oats for breakfast, heated in microwave with almond milk and topped with blueberries. It was a bit lukewarm but nonetheless it tasted better than expected, definitely helped by the berries. Also had a coffee. Then, unintentionally, I felt a burst of energy and decided to complete my 20 pressups for the day. Then sat on my bed and read. After completing a chapter, I did another 5 pressups. Then back to reading for another chapter. Then another 5 pressups. And so on...until I'd done 100 pressups. A personal best...for my entire life! Then went out and ran my fastest and continuous for some time. Didn't feel the need to worry about my knee too often. I feel so good! I hope I can keep this up and maybe aim for 100 pressups on my days off and 20 when I'm working.

Pressups 10 x 6 reps, 5 x 7 reps, 3 x 1 rep = 98. My left shoulder threaten to twinge so I didn't want to push the 2 for triple figures, figured for the sake of 2, I don't need to risk injury. I again started the run very carefully but pleased to canter along at a steady if slow pace and never felt in fear of the hip twinging.

Pressups 5 x 4 reps. Sore left shoulder forced me to take it easy today after the major exertions of the previous 2 days. Situps 5 x 1 proper rep, 10 x 1 proper, 5 x 1 easy rep, 10 x 3 easy rep. I should work harder on these situps really given the roundness of my belly! I took the run really slowly today, its what I'm going to carry on doing from now on, this is not about speed, it's about endurance. Gorgeous sunny day although bitterly cold.

Situps 5 x 2 rep, 3 x 10 rep

Situps 10 x 5 reps. Only tried 1 situp as left shoulder still sore.
