Notes & Comments

Well, that was a great day out! Up with KJTindall and another club mate at 5:45. Plenty of time, got parked, said hi to loads of pals. Went off easy as planned (was trying some kind of progressive starting at 09:30s and going down to 7:xx hoping for about 4:30 total). Chatted to mrs s, weekatiepea, shanksi, triplet dad, M1nty, Kynon and loads of others. Then moved forward a bit, saw club mate Seona and IanS. Several pee stops! Obviously well hydrated! It's when I'm going slowly, I don't feel leg pain or anything, so then I notice needing loo! Stop for water and hugs at 8 mile 1/4 checkpoint. Loved the scenery after 8 miles as it became more trail and fields. Bit muddy at the half way point. Great job by santababy, halfpint and all the helpers. Loads of folk ahead of us: sandemon, whwrunner, kjtindall, two ladies in our club going great, Jo Thom and Noanie and other speedy ladies up front. And MikeR chasing down Grant Jeans (who dropped out). Mike 2nd in end with fab time. So after the turn, sped up a bit again. 2:29 out, a bit slower than planned - it's going to be hard to get back in 2:00 hrs! Oh well, just push on. Passing folk all the way, obv. I stared in the back 50 and finished in top 50, so much have passed 200 people! Sun came out (perfect whether throughout) and slight cooling breeze is now at our back, so what's not to enjoy?! Legs starting to tire about 18 probably, but to be expected? So it was about could I do some pace on tired legs? Had 1 jaffa cake bar, some sips of water from bladder, 1 gel at half way, picked up lucozade bottle at half way, drank some then put it in bum bag. Got it out again and finished. Gave it to jelly baby lady and her high 5 ing toddlers! 2nd and final gel before 25 miles and used the 3/4 aid point to swill some water. You can see the 30s lost to do so. Now counting down the 8 to go. Started passing club mates who I expected to see - kjtindall, whwrunner, Rents, and sandemon. Last one was FV50 lady from our club, Lorna, who won the prize. But didn't catch Keziah. She chicked me as she delighted in saying. But I'm moving through everyone at the end and even caught a couple on the line. Hope they didn't mind the sub 5 finishing pace! Great organisation and atmosphere at the end. Free beer! Snacks galore, massage for £5 which I took advantage of, bags in the van, got changed. Mrs S(rrr) wasn't going to be up for another hour, so got to spend a couple of lovely hours cheering folk in and chatting. When Mrs arrived she bought me a UltraAspire PB vest. How kind! Turns out Cat from Outrun, of Mike and Cat is a horse buddy of hers. Small world! Then we took RedWineRunner and Kynon back to Stoney (congrats you two!) and went for some nice seafood at the Ship. We went to Station hotel for after party, but it was after snooze at 6pm, and we didn't fancy waiting til 8pm for it to kick off, so headed home. Shame, but chat was good even without a full on party.

Reasonably happy with the run. I got to practice real food and limited gels and how and what to carry. Had a few jaffa cake bars and gels, but only used 2 of each. Liked having some water. Didn't like having to carry lucozade bottle or stuff it in bum bag. Ultra vest will solve this. Rain jacket on at start, came off, ditto gloves and hat, fine with some space to carry. Hokas were great. No blisters, good cushioning, with Thorlos socks. Might get some X-bionic shorts. :-)G
