Malmesbury Half Marathon. Wet wet wet.

After a mile walk to registration (we passed the 12 mile marker!) in the rain we were already freezing and not feeling particularly keen.

Set off and felt much better. People started fast and I was dragged on by that, though backed off before the end of the first mile.
First 6 miles were gently uphill and I was pleased to keep to 6m/m without having to overexert. 10k split of 37:09 before the 7th mile where we crossed the valley before heading back to town.

Aim was to try and pick it up after this hill and managed pretty well. Feeling really good and was slowly running down the 3rd place guy ahead of me.
The course was a bit trickier than expected over the last 4 miles with a few mean climbs and difficult surfaces. Went through 10 miles in 59:40 and felt I could go sub1:18. Sadly hit some slopes then and I think I lost 20 seconds in miles 11 and 13 (I was flying as I finally overtook 3rd just before 12 miles) and another 10 on the 12th mile.

3rd overall, soaked and freezing but very pleased with the run and how I felt in the second half. Hopefully more to come!

That first mile was a blinder, have fun in the pub.

Easy. Nice even splits. First mile is always 10 secs or more faster (without any more effort). Best to forget it was fast and let that fast mile take the hit when the Garmin gets out of synch.

Outside London race fields are much weaker. It's crazy that I'm coming this high up in half marathons.. I'll take it though! :)

3rd place guy was me, until mile 12! :-) Well done, nicely paced with a strong finish. Good luck at Cardiff, flatter course and better weather should see a good chunk off your time.
