Notes & Comments

Started a tad quick due to the hill, but decided to carry on and ease off after Syston. But, found myself leading so pushed on. After building a large lead I decided I'd still carry on pushing as I'd rather blow up and run a poor time than ease off, get caught, not get to enjoy leading, and end up out of the medals. And if all went well I'd demoralise the opposition who would stop chasing me and I'd romp to victory.

Turns out the wheels fell off at 18, which wasn't unexpected, though disappointing it was so soon. Had a massive energy crash and was suprised it took them another 5 1/2 miles to catch me. Managed to keep going well enough to hold on to 3rd and break 2:50, but didn't feel like it was much above a shuffle from entering Birstall onwards.

Don't regret running like I did, and chuffed to have led for 15 miles. If offered 3rd and 2:48 before the start I'd have taken it, but next time I'm in that sort of situation I need to run more sensibly. I've had my moment of folly and indulgence in that scenario - need to be more canny in future (starting in Newcastle, all being well).
