Berlin Marathon. Didn't quite go as expected. Warm day, clear and sunny around 23 degrees. Thought I would start around 9 m/m pace and see how it went. Felt fantastic for first 12 miles and the pace felt pretty easy....then........from nowhere legs just totally went. Thought it was just a phase and could run it off, but never recovered and had to muster up all the strength just to run/walk and get to the end. Not really sure what happened as if I thought if I was going to "blow up" it would be nearer to 18 miles. Did also take all evening to recover and will put it down as "one of those days". However, really enjoyed being in Berlin for a few days and I was not expecting to do a great time, but didn't expect to capitulate quite so dramatically! Positives are was in a world record race (2:03:38) and beat Gebrselassie, who stepped off around 38k!

Splits for Patrick Makau's WR are pretty impressive:-

well done on completing it Chris, and quite an experience anyway, not often you are in a race were a world record is set!
Covbaldy
Good work Chris, you know why that happened though, so next time you do one you can address that in training.
Cazaroo
Hey Chris, well done in getting to the start line and getting it done! and of course for beating a legend!!!! ;O) I just think there is no substitute for those 20+ long runs week in week out to run a good marathon, but then you play with fire as far as injury is concerned, as I am now experiencing!
ChrisHurk
Thanks everyone. Think if/when I do the next one I will go for spring to get good miles in over the winter. Still not sure what went wrong so early, but onwards and upwards!
Covbaldy
LSR Chris, LSR...gotta have 3/4 20m+ runs in...
