Goring Hangover 5

Decided to do this race at the last minute - probably wounld have been better if I hadn't done a hard run the day before.

I had no idea about the course before the race, other than it was off-road. It started off with a lap of the playing fields and I worked my way through the field from about 10th to 4th as we left the playing fields. I went through the first mile in just over 6 minutes and I was feeling fine, although my legs were a little tired. We followed a track and began our climb up onto the South Downs. I picked up another place to be lying in 3rd and I was starting to think about winning a prize. The path was rutted and I was finding my footing difficult. The path continued to climb and climb and it was quite steep in parts. I started to slow and my legs were turning to jelly by the top. I was passed by one runner on the way up and another two just before the top (where they had St. Johns Ambulance on standby!). I was glad we'd stopped climbing and I was able to use the flatter sections of the course on the South Down to recover. We cut through a golf course and then began our decsent back to the start. I could hear someone behind me but I didn't want to turn round in case it gave him any encouragement. I made a decision on the steepest downhill section to push the pace to try and open up a gap which would hopefully be large enough to see me to the finish. This seemed to work as he never got close enough to me to challenge me and I finally finished in 6th, alhough the results say 7th, but both Carolyn and myself only counted 5 in front of me.

6th out of 285
