Notes & Comments

Really pleased to break 3.45. Technically I should be able to get down to 3.30 based on my Blyth 10k time (best race yet) - am I going to do another?! There was heavy rain when we arrived in Edinburgh but luckily it eased off for the start. We were running into the wind when we hit the coast but unfortunately it had died down by the time we were heading back so it didn't carry me home. There was some rain again in the first half but by the end the sun was out. Drank at all water stations except the first and had the first 3 of the 4 energy stations (was sick by the last one - orange lucozade sport yuk), but had mint cake and marzipan with me - i ate virtually all of it. marzipan was my preferred option from training but I think i will use just mint cake next time as it doesn't go as squidgy and i was feeling a bit sick at times during the race and mint helps. saw lots of people - paul blakey and chris stefani at start, sarah partington in the early miles (she was doing the relay 1st leg), paul blakey again at the middle, guy from harriers whose name i don't know near the front of the pack, steph white maybe a mile or so ahead of me as i was approaching the switchback. and of course mike, claire and sel cheering me on. i did my first half in 1.46!! was worrying when it would hit me as i didn't think i would be able to keep a just over 8 minute mile pace going. started to struggle at about 18 miles but i'm pleased that i didn't drop below nine until mile 23. i'm sure that with experience i will be able to keep this pace going. i'm not so sure about not running the distance in training; i think the last miles are hard because you've never run that far before. for me what made me slow down was how much my joints - hips but especially knees - were aching, not that my muscles ached or that i was low on energy. at end felt no worse than after first half so think i will get used to the distance. sounds like i'm doing another then!
