Ely Tri Runfest Ultra
Only 14 entrants, most of them extremely strong. Looked at the start line and thought it would be no shame to be DFL. Set out at 10:30 mm aiming for 8 hours overall with a positive split, and was in fact DFL in front of the bikes for the first 13 miles, swopping places by not very much by a debutant run-walking it (nice guy, nice family too who were supporting him and giving me a good cheer every time they saw me too). Edged ahead of him at the 13.1 miles checkpoint and picked up three more places coming towards the half way point, staying in that place for the rest of the race for a top ten finish (out of 14 🙂). Struggled from about half way and considered sacking it off at the 13.1 to go checkpoint, but continued with more walk mixed in, and it clouded over which cooled things down nicely and after the 5k to go checkpoint I found some speed again. 8:11 with a 50k PB split beating both two weeks ago and the time I ran in training/virtual race last year which is extremely satisfying. Do not think I am doing my long race training right the last few months because of family issues, but I’m unequivocally delighted with today
