Well, that was fantastic. Andy had contacted me to say what about a run at weekend. I was up for it and totally flexible. A bit of checking of rules and 2 people from 2 households within 5 miles of border of county and we could do Ochils. Yay! Went for Castlehill reservoir car park (bit of confusion delayed us by 15 mins as I parked by the cottages at the res and Andy was in the layby, but no matter, found each other. Then which spikes for the ice? Andy went with Kahtoola Micro Spikes and I put on my Nanos. I had intended to take the Micros as well (they were in car) but half mile up road and I hadn't taken them. I decided to stick with Nanos and hope I didn't regret it. I didn't!

0C temp but felt warmer than it had for a week. No wind and some blue sky and some clouds. Shorts, 3 layers, hat and gloves for me. 2 layers and longs for Andy. Me with bum bag, he with small ultra ruck sack. I had spare ski gloves, longs and base layer, foil blanket. He had full body cover and blizzard emergency kit. I had choc bar!

It was dark at 7.30 when I set off from house. Light as we started running a bit after 8, with the sun just showing orange sky on the horizon behind the hills to south and east. Up the road and it was 2cm thick ice, turn off through gate onto grass trails, surely better? Nope! Snow had been packed with lots of walkers over last week and had frozen solid. Fine 1 metre to side of path, but path was sheet ice. However our spike coped admirably, me plodding on and Andy able to sprint up vertical walls of ice!

A lovely 5 miles of Seamab, Common Edge but then a choice of Innnerdownie to add more on? Oh yeah! It really was glorious. The shin deep snow was fun, the ice was fine, quiet in the trees, beautiful views from the tops. No one out. First group we saw was coming off Innerdownie (a friend of Andy's of course!) and then some mountain bikers as we got lower down to the woods. Stoppd off at the Lopez's house at Glensherup to say Happy New Year. A river side farm road parallel to the road to take us back via Burnfoot.

Great route, great company. Thanks Andy! Oh and some great pics. Will upload some soon! :-) G
