Notes & Comments

Brandon parkrun 2/266

"You sound like you're running in flip-flops!" "Yes, I'm quite the slapper." That's how one conversation went on my return to Brandon Park. I had, indeed, donned my sandals to see how they (and I) coped.

A finishing position of 26 (out of 75) was a spit worse as a percentage of the field than the last time (69/226 - New Year's Day, 2017): I needed to finish 22nd or better to beat it, it turns out. The time was way off, 3 weeks not being enough to recover from Endure24 and not having noticeably trained for a while. Nevertheless, I managed 2nd (of 4) in category and 2nd in the "who's run the most parkruns" competition.

The run itself is a lovely one: all on trails in the park. You womble around in the woods then descend a little way so that you can climb it all again. Then repeat. I managed to pass the guy pushing the double buggy on the way up the hill, but he pulled out all the stops just before the end and I thought that breaking something¹ would be a bad plan, so I didn't try to lift my pace for the last 15 metres and let him go. Still, he was a 30-34 year old with a WAVA score of 48%, so my old man's 58% wasn't too shoddy. I was 20th on WAVA, which also wasn't too bad.

Lots of friendly marshals and well-marked course meant getting lost probably wasn't an option.

The bacon and egg roll in the café went down well afterwards and I then spent an enjoyable while with Fiona, Katie and Louis getting lost in the park.

¹ "something" being the hamstring that was fighting my over-tight hip flexor
