Notes & Comments

L2SOTM 96/140

My fitbit decided that it was going to get bored after just 1km, so there's no sensible trace for today's L2SOTM. It automatically detected the rest of the run, but there is no GPS trace, so no pacing or distance information. I wonder whether it got confused: it's set up to provide feedback every km and seems to have stopped at exactly 1km.

Anyway, technological woes aside, there was also the weather to contend with: it was really rather warm. As I was actually trying hard today, it got quite distressing over the last half. The fitbit did have the heart rate information: I was chugging along at ca. 170 for the last Ā¾ of the race.

Sam was just in front of me the whole way round. Occasionally I'd pull in a few yards but I started getting seriously dizzy at about 4.5km, lost a bit of ground and could make no further inroads. The dizziness passed after an hour or two, so that's OK. I was probably not taking enough notice of Jeremy's advice to the runners about not dying out there and slow down instead.

The footwear choice today was my road Hokas, which worked very well as long as my breathing could fuel moving my legs and I could hold decent form, which wasn't for the whole run, unfortunately. The sandals aren't going to see an outing until I work out how to adjust the straps to stop my heel dropping onto a groove in the heel cup and causing really rather deep and nasty blistering.

We had great support at the end: plenty of water to drink or have thrown over us by some (perhaps over-eager) young volunteers. I wasn't really up for much more than slumping in a bit of shade, trying to get some fluid in. Or 'on', as when Jeremy came up with a huge jerry can and started spraying it around.

It was great to seeā€•amongst all the lovely people thereā€•Jesper, Magnus and (last, but definitely not least - the quickest runner of the day, in fact) Jeanette StrĆøier back here on holiday.

[tl;dr - bit warm]
