Got to Glencoe about 9:30, having set off about 7:30 with a stop in Crieff for coffee and a donut and for Graham and I to meet up with Danny. Snow on roads reduced as we went west and completely clear by Crianlarich! So Glencoe car park, empty, 5 cars? No queues for tickets, no queues for chairlift. In fact, there might have been 10 other people in the whole resort?!
With no snow at car park level, we were worried might not be enough snow to ski. But once up the chair it was obvious that there was plenty. Piste bashers doing a great job and the groomed runs were fab. One that we tried that hadn't been was horrid - very icy!
Maybe did 10 or 12 runs in total, break for coffee, break for lunch, but not off slopes til 16:00. Great day. Less than 100 people there in the whole day, zero queues and if you pass or were passed by 2 people on a run, it was unusual.
Sure, it was cold (-12C) and windy (50, gusting 70mph, it said) so windchill of -30C or something, but actually, didn't feel that bad. We were all wrapped up warm with decent kit. I need to get a neoprene mask (borrowed Graham's). I had on 5 layers - running tshirt, 2 merino full length base layers, a cheap fleece and a cheap jacket. Salopettes were a bit rubbish - Decathlon cheap ones. With thermals below. Cheap gloves, but decent Oakley goggles and my helmet helps you keep warm too.
The ski touring set up was great. Scott S1 boots, Salomon PowderAir? and Fritschi Diamir Freeride bindings (frame bindings, not pin) and skins (can't remember brand). Easy to walk in, OK to ski downhill in (less carving than carvers, boots a bit floppy, but not bad) and certainly not hindering me. An all mountain set up.
If the weather clears up a bit and snow stays, I'm going for a tour up the hill at back of our house soon!
