Spires and Shires ultra. This was going to be a training run for me, rather than an 'A' race, so when Sylvie pulled out through injury, leaving Mel to do her first ultra on her own, I offered to run with her. Which she willingly accepted. Was quite nice being at the more sociable part of the field. I ended up with a little retinue following my navigation - although I worry they might have thought I was taking the p!ss when I kept sprinting ahead to open gates and fill Mel's bottles at the check points. Mel did brilliantly - and had she not had to stop to address a blister would have been bang on her target pace. My right achilles and knee were a bit sore - but otherwise all good, and I was able to outsprint Mel's boys at the end!!
Currently 2nd in the training league for June. It won't last...
Forgot to add note on nutrition etc.
Fruit and fibre and a slice of toast with honey at t-2.5 hours. Banana at t-1 hour ish. Piece of fruit cake at each check point, plus some pretzls at number 2, a pastie and other savouries at 3 and some jelly babies at 5. No stomach cramps, muscles cramps or wobbly spellls - but probably as I was working much less hard than usual.
Elevation
No climbs of at least 10 metres detected.
