Toronto Waterfront Marathon

Agent Orange Excellent race with brilliant organisation. But it was very hot and I didn't make my target time. My plan was to run at a steady 5.30 a km, giving a bit of extra time for drink stops and slowing towards the end while dipping below four hours. Although the race began at 0700 the day quickly got hot. I stuck to my pace but put in some extra drink stops in my plan. 55 mins to 10 km, 1.56 to halfway, 2.45 to 30km. All bang on time. But I hit a big problem at 35km. I stopped for a drink/gel and when I started again I had cramps in both thighs, calves and behind the knee. Bizarrely, I could walk strongly and that was quicker than I could run. So I walked most of the rest with the odd attempt to run for a few hundred metres, averaging just about 8 mins/km. I guess if I had started off with a more defensive strategy in the heat, I could have managed around 4.10. But then I'd have wondered if I should have gone harder. But the crowds were great. North American hollering is a big motivational factor when you're struggling! And I got one Unaffiliated 3:55:28 4:16:29 3:59:59 4:16:29 49.65
eMpTy Set myself 3 targets 3.45 Ok, 3.30 good, 3.15 out of this world. Decided on the morning to really go for it and was on target for 15 miles then fell away badly, still PB by 22mins so can't be too disappointed. Great race thoroughly recommend it to anyone. Rosiematt My first marathon so I was unsure of what time to predict. Started well and ran with a lady from Plymouth who had ran a few marathons and told me to pace myself. Weather was very hot quickly despite the 7am start. Felt a bit alone when the split came for the half marathon. The cheering kept me going and I was well chuffed to see my family at about 20km. My sister and her family live about an hour from Toronto so I managed to have a rest after the marathon and do some sight seeing too. It was amazing to see how far I had run from the CN Tower! Enjoyed myself but had to wait about an hour before being reunited with my family afterwards. Unaffiliated 5:10:21 5:10:21 5:10:21 44.22
