SusieG I should have written about this race straight away when it was still in my mind, but I didn't...

I can say that I fundamentally enjoyed this race. Pace was steady (my aim was just to get round, meeting the cut offs, since I've never run 24 miles before let alone over three mountains!) and as such I felt strong and mostly good all the way round. If I were to do it again now in the same conditions I would say that I could easily push for a fair few minutes sub- 4:30 (but I had to leave something to improve on for next year didn't I?!). I walked more of the hills than I did on our training runs but was still running more than most of the people around me (although they tended to overtake me on the downs- grr!).

The weather was nothing short of a miracle given the rain deluge leading up to and following the race. Just a brief break on the Saturday. All the tops were clear, there was some sunshine, and just a little bit of hail on top of PYG. The bogs weren't too boggy (with the exception of the massive bog at the bottom of Whernside which had excellent comedy value provided it wasn't you in it up to your thighs!) and the only issue was the very windy conditions. Strangely the wind didn't bother me as much as usual. Maybe due to the fact that I was aware I was moving forward relative to the people around me- everyone was affected the same. We did have the wind behind us at points too which I was thankful for. Probably hardest was straight into the wind 1 mile from Horton and the finish!

It was great having Chris (and his dad) at each check point to find my water bottle, gels and provide some moral support. I managed to present a chirpy demeanor each time I saw them, and also made an effort to smile at the marshalls and the photographers! It wasn't too much effort- I felt fine and afterall I was running the iconic 3 Peaks race :-)!

In terms of nutrition- this was OK. Porridge for breakfast, lucozade and (probably one too many) jelly babies/licorice allsorts before the start. Wasn't particularly hungry and thirsty at the checkpoints so I only had one gel at Ribblehead and a few jellybabies at Hill Inn. Should have thought to put some sort of nicer drink in my bottle though- squash with sugar and a bit too much salt wasn't great!

Got momentarily emotional at the finish. Just so pleased to finish and never thought I could meet the checkpoints with so much time to spare (~20 mins/30 mins). I said instantly that I enjoyed it and would do it again, and I will :-)

Thanks to Nick Keen for the lift there and back. Very very nice not to have to drive (especially back). Unaffiliated 4:34:00 4:34:00 5:00:00 4:34:00 43.26
