Ginger Chicken First ever Olympic triathlon. The swim was good, I was pleased with the bike but I couldn't really find the heart to push myself on the run. Canterbury Harriers 2:40:00 2:35:04 2:35:04
Hollywoof! 1.5km swim - horrid start - punched from left and right - ended up with so many people around and in front of me - goggles skewiff and flooded within seconds - managed to get out of the group to the right side and then got on with getting to the front of the wave - managed to stick to the very outside of the stream on the way up river (even swam into a tree under the railway bridge), but then couldn't manage to get myself in the middle of the river on the way back downstream - no idea why.
- 24:46 to T1 entrance - last year 24:44

T1 - OK - better than Bala - no cramping - but not exactly efficient - I really must learn how to get my wetsuit off without sitting down.

42km bike - stormed it - found and caught a couple of pirates down the long drift road - then had some cramps and twinges during the last few miles - got a bit worried I'd overdone it...
- 1:07ish compared to last year 1:10:20

T2 - made a real hash of getting my feet out of the shoes - ended up scraping both of them noisily down the tarmac in front of the spectators - I know at least one of the marshalls recognised me and shouted some (almost encouraging) abuse. Other than that OK, but again not very efficient...

10km run - started a bit empty-brained, also messed up my watch... within 200m got overtaken by a tall athletic looking sevenoaks tri runner... decided to see if I could go with him... stayed with him up the hill to the castle, then found strength in my legs (there has to be some benefit from this IM training), so picked up another gear and overtook him back... ended up running all 3 laps strong overtaking soooo many people (sorry to all of them!) - such a difference from last year where I was hanging on in the heat and constantly getting overtaken... had excellent support from a couple of local clubs and especially from the pirate crew... managed a sprint at the end but would have liked to have found a few more seconds...
- 43:03 compared to last year 48:04

Time overall - 2:20:10 compared to last year's 2:27:07 - which I was ecstatic and amazed with at the time.

Position 90 out of 1591 - last year 287 out of 1510.

Very happy to have gotten that big a result - also very happy to finally have properly managed an Oly run - my previous Olys have all ended in tired exhausted plods.

Final update - somehow when updating the results they found a few more fast peeps - so ended up 123 out of 1657 - 00:24:46 (78), bike + transitions 01:12:19 (175), run 00:43:03 (203) 02:20:10 Unaffiliated 2:20:10 2:20:10
JulesR 1st Tri ever, but good motivation to learn to swim before June!

**Update**: 438th out of 1591, 48th out of 180 in age group category:

Swim - Taking advice went off near the back, but thought my swim felt very slow, breast stroking when tired, feet down on low Thames bed clearing goggles and not really getting into a rhythm. Towards and round the buoy it went better and came in relatively strongly for me in 35:09. It's a benchmark that needs improving as it put me 101st out of 180 in my age category. Friend of mine started on the inside and head-butted a corregated iron board after 10 seconds knocking his goggles off - not the best start!

Transition and the cycle went well averaging 20.8mph and coming in including transitions in 1:17:15 which was 41st out of 180 in the category. Not much I could have improved on in the cycle without stronger legs or toys such as tribars/posher bike.

Run was ok but felt like I wasn't racing, almost going through the motions in case I blew up. Splits were even or maybe even a bit negative, finishing in 41:57 to give 8th out of 180 in category.

So overall, absolutely delighted with the result and amazed I came through the swim in a fit state to put together a time so much faster than the 3 hour+estimate before. Finding 5 minutes starts approaching the top 20 category and just the swim must have that possibility and under 2:30 starts to look possible for future age grouping which seems like a good target.

Pirates trisuit performed superbly but didn't spot Hollywood going past me - where was he? Stirling Triathlon Club 2:34:23 2:34:23
Mazza aka Fitso 16th age group placing
swim 36.09 (not bad for me) - started badly with misted up goggles. Couldn't get into a rhythm with my breathing and seriously thought about getting out in the first 50 metres and abandoning the race. Struggled to the turn buoy but managed to pass a few stragglers from the previous wave which gave me enough of a boost to carry on. Got round the turn buoy only to get serious cramp in my calf which forced me the swim the final 400/500 metres without using my legs at all, so feeling fairly pleased with the time.
bike - 1.18.14 - great bike. passed masses of people. Really enjoyed it but might have pushed it a bit hard with the run still to do
run 51.06 - felt really long and slow, struggled up to the castle each time but I think I managed to keep a reasonably consistent pace.
Plently of room for improvement on the swim in the particular. Will be aiming for sub 2.40 at London on the strehgth of this. Unaffiliated 3:00:00 2:45:32 2:45:32

TW 2nd year at this one....did 2.48 in 2006, so looking for under 2.40...UPDATE....Finished in 2.36.32..very, very pleased with that. Swim....33.54 out of the water..all felt OK, pretty comfortable in the water, just need to work on it more to pull another a few minutes off that time. T1..no issue...Bike...1.15.21 (inc transitions)...this was great...pushed hard all the way...was with a group for first half (not drafting), trying to get away from them, so made me push hard...then they went away from me, so spent 2nd half trying to chase them down...T2..no problem, but did put shoes on then take off and put back on, as had a stone in them!...Run...was OK (not greta, just OK)...14.30, 15.30 and 16.30 for the 3 laps. Hollywood passed me on 3rd lap, tried to stay with him, but couldn't :-(...overall delighted with result...and now looking at magical 2.30 for MK tri...need to do some work on the swim to make that happen.
