weeble After being quite calm, was hit by big pre-race jitters at the Marathon Expo on Saturday. Had a night of increasingly ridiculous anxiety dreams about getting to the start line (including getting trapped in elaborate ticket barriers on the Metro, and turning up at the start wearing 10 layers of clothes). Bizarre things to worry about given that I'd laid my race kit out neatly the night before, and only had a 5 minute walk from hotel to the start line.

However, as it turned out I pretty much DID miss the start due to being stuck in a queue for one of the portaloos (no joke, 5 loos for 35,000 people!) One of the very, very last stragglers to cross the line, 21 mins after the official start - no one on the road at all except a few spectators milling around. Really distraught, thought I'd be running the whole race on my own. However, after 2km caught up with the back of the pack, and felt a lot happier. Said goodbye to Mark at 3km as he whizzed off to try to beat 4hrs.

First 20km went by without incident – just enjoying the ride. Perfect marathon weather – weak sunshine and clouds and no wind. Set off slightly faster than my planned pace as wanted to catch up, it felt comfortable so stuck with it, was feeling quite confident about hitting my 4:30 target and was starting to believe I could do a bit better. Drank at all the water stations and took first gel at 15k (and again at 20k, 30k and 35k, I think, and grabbed a rare Powerade at 25k).

20-30k still feeling good, running along with a big grin on my face. Not many spectators but managed to high-five a few kids and got one shout out which lifted my spirits even further. Long tunnel was fun if confusing (looked like we were running down-hill but felt like up-hill). Up-and-down sections of the underpasses weren’t as hard as I thought they’d be.

Passing 30k with a bit of good crowd support, starting to think I could start to push a bit harder but held back from getting too carried away, and slowly stepped up the pace. Revised my target time down to 4.10-4.15. Legs were feeling achy, almost numb, but still surprisingly strong. Between 30-35k really started to focus and increased the effort. By about 35k the idea of sub-4.10 had entered my head and I just went for it. No idea what my splits were over the last few km but must have been about 5min/km. Totally understand now what people mean when they say it is a 6 mile race after a 20 mile run.

Crossing the finish line in 4:09 - close to tears, absolutely elated. Got a big hug and a kiss from the lady giving out medals. Everything had gone perfectly, better than I could have hoped to imagine. Still buzzing two days later. Next time I'm going for sub 4:00, can't wait!

Foxy the race starts on the Champs d'elysee in front of the arc de triomphe - what an amazing setting - felt great to be starting where lance armstrong had completed each of his 7 Tour de france victories - He's my ultimate sporting hero.

I set out aiming for 4 hours 30 mins & got to half way in 2 hours 2 mins & could still see the balloons of the 4 hour pacemakers just 200 yards away - I did some quick maths & realised with some good pacing i could possibly break 4 hours & i ran a negative split to do just that :)

was very happy as never expected to break my goal time by over 30 mins & over the moon to have a PB starting with a 3.

started with the sounfds of highway to hell in my Ears by AC/DC & ran the full alphabet finishing to ZZ Top sharp dressed man (Ironically i felt anything but a sharp dressed man !!)

a great light blue T-shirt in cotton faeturing the major sites - arc, eifel tower etc. The medal features the Eifel tower & is rather bling - i like it :)

bedlam_g My first marathon, decent half marathon time of 1.51.30. Then I seemed to go to sleep for 5km made up the pace for the next 5km then lost it after a fuel stop at 31km couldn't get any kind of pace last 2km took me 15mins. Amazing course though great city and fab race, would do it again.
