Go-KL Milton Keynes Half Marathon. First race of the year (Apart from cross country). Was confident I could go quite well if I'd got over the over training of the week just gone. Weather was sunny until near the end, around 10C, but a very strong wind which was cold when a headwind, which it was for just over half the race.
Race Report:
Miles 1-3
Bit heavy legged at the start, was initially concerned that quite a few people were going past me, but Garmin suggested I was already running sub-6 so settled down and let the race unfold. After a couple of miles and with the twists bringing some head winds, settled into a good rhythm.
Lap 1 - 1 miles - 05:56 - 167bpm avge - 177bpm max -
Lap 2 - 1 miles - 06:01 - 172bpm avge - 176bpm max -
Lap 3 - 1 miles - 05:50 - 172bpm avge - 176bpm max -
Miles 4-6
Miles 4 and 5 felt great, especially the fifth mile around the lake, where we had the strong wind at our back and I felt good. Went through 5 miles in 29:27 (On Garmin) and did official 10k in 37:05. Going through 10k we had a taste of things to come as the wind hit hard in places.
Lap 4 - 1 miles - 05:54 - 172bpm avge - 174bpm max -
Lap 5 - 1 miles - 05:46 - 173bpm avge - 176bpm max -
Lap 6 - 1 miles - 06:06 - 171bpm avge - 174bpm max -
Miles 7-9
Quite literally running around the houses, I maintained good effort which was good considering it was mostly run into part headwind. At the time I felt a sub 1:19 was definitely on the cards. Mile 9 though suggested the wind may deny that.
Lap 7 - 1 miles - 06:02 - 170bpm avge - 173bpm max -
Lap 8 - 1 miles - 06:01 - 170bpm avge - 174bpm max -
Lap 9 - 1 miles - 06:09 - 170bpm avge - 172bpm max -
Miles 10-11
The wind to mile 10 was pretty savage and the going got really tough and lonely as there were hardly any runners around. Went through 10 miles in an unofficial PB of 1:00:04 (On Garmin - around 20 seconds slower on course). Mile 11 was the toughest of the race with a long drag into full on headwind. Miles 9-11 was where the onset of a stomach upset began, which made life just that little bit harder.
Lap 10 - 1 miles - 06:12 - 170bpm avge - 174bpm max -
Lap 11 - 1 miles - 06:19 - 172bpm avge - 174bpm max -
Miles 12-13.1
Through to mile 12, there was a bit of respite from the wind but still more headwind than behind. Then blissfully for the last mile we had a tail wind, and seeing that I'd just slipped outside my PB time I really put in an all out effort to the finish, beating my old PB by 7 seconds.
Lap 12 - 1 miles - 06:09 - 171bpm avge - 175bpm max -
Lap 13 - 1 miles - 05:44 - 172bpm avge - 175bpm max -
Lap 14 - 0.2 miles (Garmin measured course as 13.2) - 01:00 - 177bpm avge - 182bpm max -

Made a quite swift recovery, was obviously really pleased to set a PB, but felt that had there been no wind I could've gone about a minute quicker and the stomach upset hurt a little too. Official finish time 1:19:08, 41st overall.

DrBob set off smoothly and tried to keep it going, but struggled into the wind between 9 and 11 miles. last mile was fun and done in 5.41 which was more pleasing.
I made gun to finish 81.01 and thought the chip time would be slightly quicker, but apparently two seconds slower.
Loads further back and slower than last year, which was still disappointing despite the bad training, lack of focus going into this etc. Cambridge & Coleridge AC 1:18:57 1:19:14 1:23:00 1:21:03 78.79

Agent Orange Ouch. Haven't hurt this much for a while. But incredibly pleased with the run. Plan was to begin around 7.50 pace and see how it went. But that felt far too easy so pushed on a bit - 7.20 pace was closer to the reality with a bit of wind behind. 10km in 46 mins. Going really well until 9 miles. Then the wind hit us full in the face and the going got really tough (not helped by lack of long runs which meant I was short on stamina). Gritted my teeth and chomped on the jelly babies. Kept it together for an improbable PB. Unaffiliated 1:38:42 1:38:42 1:45:00 1:38:42 62.05
swerver 5 months after first Half doing to see how far I have or Haven't progressed !
Race complete knocked 6min12secs off my PB ! Course was more hilly than I first thought, and wind was awful. Started right at the back and nearly 5 mins passed before the start line was crossed, enjoyed going past people and kept to target pace of 7.40 well, slowed up more than I thought I would during miles 10,11 and 12. Overall very pleased and if I hadn't had recent knee injury restricting training I think a sub 1:40 would have been possible, that time is my target for the Newark half. Finished before it tipped it down which was a benifit. Werrington Joggers 1:35:02 1:38:50 1:45:00 1:41:43 57.01

This was my 25th half-marathon, so I've had plenty of opportunities to learn what to do and, more importantly, what not to do. But today, for whatever reason, logic went 'out of the window' and I went totally insane. I didn't respect the distance.

Rather, I set off liked a 'badged' lunatic and ran the first two miles at 5-mile PB pace. I did ease off a little after that, but nowhere, nowhere near enough. My time through 10kms was faster than all bar one of my actual 10kms race times! The craziness continued, with my 10-mile split shattering my personal best over that distance in 10-mile races.

Of course, the inevitable happened. The 'wheels came off'. Not mentally, but physically. As a result, I had to take perhaps half a dozen (can't remember exactly) walk breaks during Miles 11 and 12. I reconciled myself to a 'coping strategy' to nurse me home.

However, just before the Mile 12 marker, everything just clicked back into place. Maybe the walk breaks helped, I don't know. I ended with a very 'sparky' last mile or so. The last 200 metres, I was at full pelt.

I think that I might have PB'd today, although I was too 'befuddled' to care much about my stop-watch. I'll await the chip time.

If I did PB, I can have no complaints. Especially, given my wholly inappropriate training regime of mainly short treadmill efforts.

But I can't help thinking what might have been had I held it together. Perhaps, my 'holy grail' of a sub-100 minute half?

But I live to fight another day. The Silverstone Half next Sunday, to be exact. That's if I can face doing it all again in just 8 days - groan.

Daddy long legs 1st road half since Nov 07. Pace judgement difficult. Willl use as a trial for a half latter in 09 and hopefully a sub 1.50

Good run. Wind betwwen 8 -11 miles prevented a better time but otherwise conditions perfect.

Need more marshalls over the first few miles. Don't see posts in path until you are on top of them. No warning from marshalls or signs.

Good route for the most part.

Organisation reasonable. It took too long to clear the finish and there was no food. Given the cost of the race
they could have provided a banana or chocolate bar. Too cold to stand in line to clear the finish area.

Difficult to see what benefit was derived from the NIKE sponsorship.

Nevertheless I will be back to try again in future years. Bedford Harriers AC 1:45:12 1:45:12 1:55:00 1:47:39 58.32

hatterfan Treated this a bit of training run due to my lack of training since the turn of the year. Quite pleased to have broken 2 hours, although 9 mins slower than last year. youcanrunfasterlynne felt terrible. Probalby sarted off too fast and reallyslumped in the middle of the race. Felt good at the end though. I couldn't seem to drink on the move, so I had to do a bit of walking to get enought liquid down. th lucozade sport as welcome. Its not a flat course, I think its more undulating.
