Hollywoof! The weekend's dilemma was whether to use the New Forest marathon place or to turn up to my gym's aquathlon for a chance at silverware (I've come second two years in a row)... Saturday morning I eventually decided to go for the mara - then changed my mind - then changed back again - then... 9:40 Sunday morning found myself in New Milton heading out into the slight unknown - I'd not run any hills since January, and have only managed around 20 miles a week in the 2 months since IMA... To cut a long story semi-short...

I got stung by a wasp 30 minutes before the start... after the initial swearing I tried to persuade myself this would help get the adrenaline flowing...

it was my first marathon since 1997 where I haven't started in the toilet... and as a result I desparately needed a very long loo break in the first hour...
my Garmin was useless - all over the place - but the official mile signs were clear and seemed to be in the right place.
took it steady but quietly for the first half - through in about 1:48...
miles 14 through 20 I was flying... looking at my time I was actually only maintaining the same 8 minute mile pace but I was overtaking heaps of familiar people from the first half...
miles 18 onwards were unexpectedly hilly and the wind was in our faces... I managed to keep around 8 minute miling, until mile 25 which was my one really slow mile - I think was maybe as slow as 10 minutes...
then back to 8 minute miling and the finish was quickly in sight.... 1:46->7 ish for the second half so I'm claiming negative splits.
I'm very happy to have done 3:34:48 given the odd preparation - that's only 3 minutes slower than Abingdon last year and this course was definitely tougher and I wasn't really pushing this yesterday. Also my right foot seems to survived the race - so the toe injury is still on the mend (phew)
I liked the race set up - friendly, loads of marshalls, a nice course (although I was surprised how much of it was on the road and on how much supporter traffic there was) and a good number of racers to chase. Also the hog roast served as superb recovery food.
Despite the result, I don't think I'll try the wasp thing again...

Meanwhile back in Knightley-land Shiraz won the gym's aquathlon outright... if I'd been there it would have been interesting to see if I'd have managed to beat her...

nabox Have to agree with MacDaz, I was on for a good time however from mile 20 onwards it did feel like it was uphill alll the way to the end. I also underestimated this and my legs are certainly paying for it now.Bit disappointed I did not do a sub 350,however it was a personal best ! Unaffiliated 3:26:38 3:44:08 3:50:00 3:51:40 54.53
MacDaz That was hard. All was well and was looking at a 3:40 until mile 19. From then on it seemed like I was constantly running up hill. For a few miles I really didn't think I was going to make it. Made London feel like a 10k. Well maybe not but I really underestimated the hills...Still not far off my prediction! Unaffiliated 3:42:40 3:49:59 3:50:00 3:49:59 53.55
Alan Started off too fast unfortunately and paid the price later on. Between 8:30 and 9:00 min miles to start and 11:00 min miles from 20 on (although this was also linked with my body not having a good reaction to the water that tasted a bit of disinfectant!)
