WillBill A cracking day in Newtonmore. The race was part of the Highland Games which meant a fair bit of hanging around, waiting for the start, but also meant lots of spectators to cheers us off & back in at the finish. Had a chance to walk the course in the morning - rather shorter than advertised (at around 3.5 miles) but rough at the top but with a great, quick section through the woods on the lower part of the ridge. Start was a mad dash round the grass (300m) athletics track, under the fence, across a lumpy field to hurdle the two fences at the far side, then through the river, up the steep bank, scramble over the crash barrier alongside the road, and then onto the hill. Limited overtaking opportunities once on the hill, so it was a case of setting off hard, getting a position & trying to keep it. Quick coming off, especially through the woods - could have gone faster but couldn't pass the two guys in front until it was too late. Faded a bit on the run-in & lost a place on the last bend but pleased with overall position (provisionally 34th) for a British champs race. Miniature bottles of whisky for all finishers, though couldn't partake immediately though as we'd entered for the 4x150m relay. This was fun but showed-up lack of sprinting speed on the flat. Finished midway down the field in the relay - but expecting rather better team result for the main event. Fife AC 31:57 31:57 31:57 62.77
