Kaine My first entry for a middle (half-iron) distance triathlon. For those unfamiliar with the distance, it covers 70.3 miles (113 kms): 1.2 swim, 56 bike, 13.1 run (1.9/90/21.1).

Rather than the sunny morning that I imagined I'd wake to when I booked the event so many months ago, the night's heavy rain had given way to drizzle, dampening spirits a little during the walk to transition at 5.00 a.m. to rack my bike. The start was delayed for half an hour, which simply meant hanging around and getting cold. I don't like being cold. This aside, once finally in the water I was feeling pretty excited and keen to get going. I still wasn't thinking about the race as a whole, I tend to deal with what's immediately ahead of me before considering what's next.

Starting in the second wave of a hundred-or-so competitors, I stayed near the back of the group toward the first buoy, only relaxing into a good rhythm once the field rounded the corner and had spread out a little. Stayed out of bother, no kicks, bumps or incidents, and finished feeling strong, and rather pleased with my efforts (195/494 in 36:00).

Because of the distance and the weather I'd packed so much more kit in my transition bag than for any of the Olympic (Standard) distance races I'd entered before. This led to the first transition (T1) being rather a fuss and taking an extraordinary amount of time. I was worried about being cold, so opted against going straight out in a wet tri-suit. I stripped, dried and put on all fresh kit, base layer, arm warmers and socks - I was going to be out there a while and wanted to comfortable (6:51, ridiculous!).

The 2-lap bike route was really flat, really quick, but never having ran off the back of such a long ride before I wanted to stay in zone 2 of maximum heart rate to ensure I had the ability to turn out a decent run. This meant getting used to being passed... a lot... by seemingly everyone! Had to make one 'stop' after the first lap and managed to get a couple of hot cross buns, a banana and four gels down throughout to keep energy up (343/494 in 3:04:36, disappointing).

T2 was less fuss, ditch the warm stuff and get going (2:50). The 3-lap half-marathon run was a mix of muddy off-road trails around some of the lakes and country lanes. Another enforced 'stop' at the beginning of the first lap, and then I set about catching all those folk that passed me on the bike. And I did, scores of them. It felt good just running past everybody, but as the laps progressed and with the weather finally dry and warming up considerably, a little fatigued I couldn't manage to hang on to my target pace. A strong finish and a big smile for the camera (20/494 in 1:31:06).

All told, the race took me 5:21:25, finishing 167/494. Though the bike route came up a little short on my Garmin, it's been a good taster of longer distance events, and while a full Ironman may be a while off yet, I definitely know I'll get around to it someday.
