MrMarcus Went through a real rocky patch at 21 miles and almost pulled out of the race but pulled myself together and got it done. Missed out on my target time but still got a massive 8 minute personal best so all in all, a good mornings work :-) Ipswich JAFFA RC 3:09:31 3:09:31 2:58:00 3:09:31 66.15

jamesy1981 The Brighton Marathon is getting bigger because it does a lot of stuff right. It's a quick course with PB potential and a great atmosphere. However, there are a lot of things which are bad and some of these are things that have declined since I last ran it in 2013.

Firstly, the exhibition is getting increasingly less exciting and not just because I have experienced it before. Those that have attended the London Marathon expo sneer at the Brighton one and I used to defend its honour. This year though, we were sort of routinely shoved into a tiny cramped area to pick up our numbers, there was no atmospheric music on the way in and the exhibits were all pretty dull.

Secondly, the toilets at the start were terrible. There were nowhere near enough for the demands and I reckon it took a good 45 minutes for some people to negotiate the toilet queues.

Thirdly, the water stations were a nightmare this year. They were every 100m it felt like and on both sides of the road. Given that they now opt to give out cups to drink from, which makes the runner have to stop moving, I nearly got taken out by runners darting across me to grab water 6 times during the race. If they were on one side of the road, runners who do not want to stop for a drink could take the wider path instead of having to play Frogger. I also nearly tripped over several cups with tired legs. My girlfriend also got hit in the face by a couple of the cups which were lighter than the bottle things they used before which would skid along the ground instead of fly through the air.

Finally, the course was so bottle necked for the first 5 miles that I had to run at a slower pace than I wanted to and could only occasionally move up the field with a quick sprint. Not an ideal way of pacing myself. A lot of seasoned runners tell you it's ok over the first 5 miles to run at a slower pace and just get your rhythm but I was definitely not able to find my rhythm until about 8 miles in when the roads were finally wide enough to accommodate a bit of overtaking.

As one of the most expensive Marathons there is I don't feel like this race really puts the runner first and, this is only an impression I get, it seems more about making a bit of revenue. It definitely doesn't feel like it is organised by runners who understand other runners.

But hey. As I say, it's a popular atmospheric event, the tshirt and medal are always very good...and well, I've given several aspects of this 4 or 5 stars. I just think it is let down in a big way in a few key areas. Burgess Hill Runners 3:35:26 3:35:26 3:35:26 56.49

andrewprod Fantastic support. Great atmosphere. Loved water in cups (sorry). Fast and pretty flat course. For such an expensive race though the goody bag was truly dreadful and medal and t-shirt only average. The expo was a big disappointment, and just a means to sell me some socks ( I bought some socks!). Simply not enough toilets at the start. Finish area needs re-thinking (maybe it was my own fault for not walking far enough but in my exhausted state I completely missed the food and drinks stalls and turned and walked back up 500 steps). Overall though really enjoyed the run, and the people of Brighton were brill! Plymouth Coasters 4:14:18 4:14:18 4:30:00 4:14:18 55.01
