Borrowdale Fell Race

crispy We camped at Chapel Farm as usual and I can honestly say I haven't seen weather so bad in August ever, even for Borrowdale so I was only a little surprised when the organiser announced at the start that we would not be going over Scafell Pike this year. Shame really since this is such a great race but I couldn't let it spoil the event and they were only thinking of our safety. I don't think I have seen the fells so wet underfoot in August either. Felt strong all the way to Sty Head, in fact I quite enjoyed the shortcut we had to take from Esk Hause to there, I made up quite a few places. Met a friend there for more drink before the climb up Gable. I played it safe this year, not having recced the route off the top this time round and couldn't remember the bearing so I stuck to the path which lost me some time. Round Green Gable and Brandreth I was feeling a little tired but I was perked up by remembering a couple of short cuts and flew down the hillside to Honister. Still feeling pretty good met the family there who had only just made it in time since they didn't know about the shortened route, more drinks for the last climb up Dalehead. Always a killer this one even though we had probably done about 1000ft less this year and about 2 miles less, I was feeling a bit sick coming off the top. Nevertheless I enjoyed the run in, the weather had cleared up a bit so the views were good but it was very, very wet coming past the tarn and the mud was knee deep in many places. Coming through the slate mines there was an old guy sat next to the path warning me about the rocks and as I passed that point I could see why, there was a huge blood stain where one of the previous runners must have come a cropper. I love the bit in this race where you hit the last grassy descent before the flat run to the finish, its such a great feeling to be completely exhausted after a great day out in the hills. Forget the roads, every runner needs to do this race at least once! Unaffiliated 3:58:58 3:58:58 3:58:58 32.22

Mud Rocs Fantastic experience running in the Borrowdale Fells, slightly disappointing that the wet and windy weather meant couldn't do the full route, though I certainly wasn't complaining as I trudged up Dale Head! Splits were as follows 46 mins up Bessy Boot, 50 mins to Esk Hause, 14 mins to Sty Head, 29 mins to top Great Gable, 37 mins to Honister, 31 mins up Dale Head and 31 mins to the finish. A wet, muddy and truly memorable run. Holcombe Harriers 3:59:24 3:59:24 3:59:24 33.24
