The Claygate Country 5 Run is an annual five mile run organised by the Claygate Flower and Village Show Society.  It has been held annually since the 1980s, apart from 2020 and 2021 due to COVID-19 restrictions.  It attracts hundreds of runners and is held at the Claygate Recreation Ground on the Sunday before the Claygate Flower & Village.

The race starts at 10.30am at the Recreation Ground on Sunday 2nd July.

About the Run

The Run follows a route which, apart from the final mile and first few hundred yards, is on footpaths on and around Claygate Common and Arbrook Common.  Only moderate hills are encountered during the course.  Newcomers to The Run are often surprised at the attractiveness of the countryside.

For 2023 the long-standing course has been improved by avoiding the short section on the main road (Copsem Lane), as well as the narrow path from the road, and the car park. The course now takes full advantage of the pathways of Arbrook Common to provide a beautiful run through the woods of Claygate. The final section is unchanged and, overall, the course maintains the same trail/road balance as in previous years.

2023 will also feature chip to chip timing to ensure every participant gets an accurate time over the 5 mile course.

Runners of any ages from young to senior with any ability are welcome.  A wheelchair competitor took part in 2019.  It’s a fun run for some and competitive for others.  Each runner will have a microchip attached to their running shoe that at the finish will automatically activate recording of their time and calculate their finishing position.

There are four age categories for each male and female runners.

Female Juniors                  (under 16)                          Male Juniors                      (under 16)

Female Seniors                 (16-34)                                Male Seniors                     (17 – 39)

Female Veterans              (35-49)                                Male Veterans                  (40 – 54)

Female Super Veterans  (50+)                                    Male Super Veterans      (55 and over)

The first three to finish in each class receive a trophy to retain.  The winner in each class also gets awarded a cup to retain for a year.

In addition, there is a Family section that must include one Junior runner.  The pair with the lowest combined finishing places in each category win the honour of being family champions.

Father (or Grandfather) / Son (or Grandson)

Father (or Grandfather) / Daughter (or Granddaughter)
