Interview with EvilPixie

pedroscalls asks: Congratulations EP on your well deserved MoTM win. My question is if time and money was no object what race or route would you love to do?

EvilPixie says: I think that the Disney Marathon would be fun with all the characters about and the cool medal!
RRR-CAZ 🇬🇧 asks: Congratulations EvilPixie
If you were offered two golden tickets to any sporting event what would you choose to watch?

EvilPixie says: Such a hard question to answer!

I think that an athletic championships like the Olympics on 100m night must be amazing, or the velodrome or pool but TBH I think that although you get the atmosphere there would be a lot of waiting and limited viewing. You see more on TV
However, from experience I have to say the finish line in the later hours of a big ironman triathlon where you see the emotion of those finishing whilst watching others still running is amazing. I've been at the finish if several Outlaw finishes and fought back tears! Felt guilty at leaving even for a wee! It's raw emotion and I volunteer at Outlaw so I can be there for that reason.
LindsD asks: Congratulations! Why tri? :)

EvilPixie says: Oh that’s a good Question! Back in the old dark days of RunnersWorld pre Fetch I was a runner who occasionally swam and owned a bike. I got so many people (AKA Pirates) say why not tri I did one. A short one in order to prove I could if I wanted to. I used my 5 gear Raleigh bike with smiley faced bell and panier rack. I loved it but the reason I looked at others was …. I didn’t like being overtaken on my bike! It wasn’t fair I had an old bike not a poncy road bike. So I bought a second had bike off a pirate! And that was it … I had a bike so I had to do another one and it snowballed from there.
Gobi asks: Nice one EP - motivation has never been an issue for you and your tolerance for longer sessions is impressive however, have you considered short distance racing and a quest for speed to shake the tree a little ?

EvilPixie says: Now this question has had me pondering coach …. I guess I never saw myself as fast enough to do short stuff. That I am naturally slower so longer seemed more appropriate. Or the other answer would be … did a 5K loved it, entered a half, loved it entered London as NO ONE ever gets in first time and I did so I ended up doing longer stuff! I always dreamed (and still do TBH) of getting a London Marathon GFA but fear it is beyond me.
Diogenes asks: Congratulations, EP. If you were a biscuit, what biscuit would you be?

EvilPixie says: Ginger nut as I'm a bit nutty? But then are ginger nuts nutty?

Or chocolate digestive as I want to be liked by everyone!
Pothunter asks: Congratulations! What would you have for your death row meal? Starter, main and dessert plus something to wash it down :-)

EvilPixie says: Now lets see – Australian red wine like The Full Fifteen or Black Stump Or Willy Willy heck why not all 3 if I’m on death row! (what have I done BTW?)
Reverse order … pud has to be chocolate cheesecake my 2 favourite things served with vanilla ice cream!
Main probably a nice steak and chips
Starter … harder as I normally miss this to make sure I get pud!
westmoors asks: Congratulations Pix. If you could meet anyone, past or present, who would it be and why?

EvilPixie says: Ada Lovelace would be a wonderful person to meet – she was “programming computers” before computers were a real thing! Daring to do the thinking that men did not women at that time. Would be fascinating to talk to her I think.
Ness asks: Congratulations, Pix. Now I have the chance to ask you the question you asked me in my MOTM interview. That is.... Where in the world would you most like to run for fun? Why?

EvilPixie says: Inca Trail or Great Wall of China or Grand Canyon would all be amazing but totally impossible as I am scared stupid of heights!
So, in that case it would probably be a love British run with friends maybe somewhere like the Lakes or Scotland or York Moors or … basically somewhere green and scenic with a great café stop!
geordiegirl asks: Congratulations on your win, very well deserved. Your running motivation is inspirational these past few months and no sign of slowing down, what has been the biggest influence to get you here and what are your plans for next year?

EvilPixie says: Thanks GG I appreciate it.
I thrive off the encouragement I get so every well done or words of wisdom from you all makes me grin from ear to ear and want more. I find it quiet addictive. Plus seeing lots of colour on my Fetch Log and the numbers go higher than I thought I'd see again.
When I was doing #NZD at the start of the year (until I got covid in March) it was the full Fetch log that spurred me on. I'm a simple creature really!

As for next year I have events entered ...
the Centurion Grand Prix series that finishes in April
Bramley 10 in Feb

and the Chester Metric Marathon in October.
Other than that it depends on the day that you ask!
Part of me wants to do my first ultra in July (RRU) and just 50k it's an "easy" one to tick the ultra box with!
Part of me wants to do another marathon purely because I failed to get into London again! (hmm must enter the FERC draw if there is one!)
Part of me says nah max half marathon less hours or like Gobi asks above maybe shorter.
Then another voice says ... why race? Just enjoy it!
So the short answer is no idea! But if there is a wiff of forum FOMO I may be there!
Mushroom asks: Congratulations. If you had to choose a condiment to play you in your life story, what would you choose?

EvilPixie says: Ketchup as everyone likes it and it goes with everything
Kingsholm asks: Well done, what is your favourite race?

EvilPixie says: This is hard!
I love doing the London marathon as the crowds are just so great (being half deaf means the noise isn’t an issue!) and I love the Outlaw triathlon as I’ve supported so many times it’s like family. Then the Equinox 24 is great fun too as it’s like a running social event!
But I think my favourite event is actually a lapped race and I HATE laps but local friendly great value for money and a 11am start!
The Centurion 5m Grand Prix series every November to April in Coleshill.
Helegant asks: Congratulations Pix. This has been an interesting year for you and I wonder what has changed between your ears to maintain your motivation this year?

EvilPixie says: No Idea H!
At the start of the year I was grinning daily to see I was keeping a #NZD training log and that was really motivating. Then I lost my tri love and just started running.

Seeing myself getting close to the 100m a month was very motivating as I hadn’t done that for years and didn’t expect it anymore, so I guess I got a bit fixed on that. As a result, the times started improving and I started feeling stronger and that became my goal … minimum 100m a month and try to keep my average lower each month.
I have very little self-belief so seeing these improvements didn’t seem real, so I had to keep going to see it was true
I have very simple needs – seeing things change for the better or people commenting on training and blogs gives me the biggest thrill. So winning MOTH has blown me away.
Velociraptor asks: Well done, Pix :-) You were a talented performer in another sport when you were younger. Why did you choose running as an adult?

EvilPixie says: Simple … people ran to lose weight, I thought at 29 I was fat and was going to be fat at 30 so wanted to change that. (I wasn’t fat at all) and after my 1st run I hated it and only carried on because I “FAILED” to be able to complete the 10 sets of 1min running that the program said do. I hate failure and at the time I hated the idea of failing more than I hated the running!

minardi asks: Many congratulations. What's your favourite on-the-move go-to fuelling snack?

EvilPixie says: My current favourite is Kendal Mint gels the chocolate mint flavour is like melted after eights! I have been known to use the Kendal mint cake, chia charge bars, High 5 gels, Power bar coke flavoured gel shots … for my 2nd London marathon I used marzipan (check it out it’s the perfect carb fat protein ratio just missing the electrolytes!) and I have used Percy Pigs on the bike, but M&S have changed the recipe, and these aren’t so good now!
In the office it’s Carb Killa protein bars or Chia Charge bars
FreshStart asks: Congratulations EP. What gives you more pleasure, the training or the racing?

EvilPixie says: I Don’t race that much so it’s a tough question to answer. I like the feeling of getting to work under my own steam and that smug feeling of nailing a long run. Then you can’t beat that finish line feeling! I have on several occasions welled up as I got to the finish and been on the verge of hyperventilating (I did at my first every half and the St John’s people were most concerned!!)
I have a great picture of Me, Vrap, eL Bee and Running Duck at the end of the Trailwalker where I am crying into Bee’s arms!
Mandymoo asks: Congratulations- what's your go too food after a race or event ?

EvilPixie says: Depends on the event! I’ve done a few triathlons where a burger and chocolate milkshake was required but then I have also headed home for a quick evening meal of Pizza. The Centurion run I mentioned above is so good as it means I can either put something on before I go and have hot stew that night or, even better, pop into M&S on the way home for a Dine In!
So no real finite food TBH but if there is a goody bag I will empty it!
run free asks: Congratulations EP. With COP27 going on at the moment and more extreme weather, do you think events should be more conscious of their carbon footprint and what can participants do to reduce their carbon footprint to and from events?

EvilPixie says: I've thought about this long and hard before replying!
It's very hard.
For me if I was to use public transport I wouldn't do any races. My local race just 5k away is a 20m race, and the bus there is only a couple a day Morning and night, and less frequent at weekends.
I run commute twice a week because I can't use the bus because it is so infrequent.
I think a better approach would be to encourage people to use hydration vests (OK maybe not the pro!) or like the ultra runners use their own cup and homemade energy bars. Using gel flasks is also a way to reduce impact.
Chester this year did an option to pay less but not get anything for finishing but those who did want a goody bag got a fabric one they could reuse time and time again.
So I think there is a lot we can all do overall but the actual transport side in the UK is so poor that I don't think we can make too much impact unfortunately (although I do know of a triathlete who is a train driver who uses his free travel and bike to go everywhere!)
