I think if I was a regular at a parkrun and they had a "I'm new and don't know anyone zone" Id go and say hello and try to make them feel welcome. I'm not unfriendly (usually).

I guess the advantage for people like me of having a "Happy to Chat" bench is that if you sit on another bench you're justified in not talking to anyone. Every cloud.....

I had a conversation with a running friend who is an NHS psychologist and they are pioneering at counselling session by text chat app. Some people are able to open up far more in text than they can either face to face or even by phone or video conf. Text can be very effective.

But a Happy to Chat bench is pretty cool too! I'm lucky, I'm actually pretty happy to chat in person too, not just this endless drivel that you see in FE. I can do endless drivel in real life too. Talented, moi?! :-) G

Hmm . thinking about an equivalent thread - 'sit here and contemplate the white empty space in silence' (no headphones or tinny music either)

I guess (hope) you're delurgied now Fetch? Otherwise we also need a quarantine bench.

Perhaps there should be a 'Happy to Listen' bench as well.

It's got a lot colder this week, hasn't it? (always good to start a chat talking about the weather)

um - I'm getting there. Still not quite feeling like a run - it's on my chest a bit.

I saw a happy to chat bench the other day in Ryde. It was empty unlike the other benches nearby! I also saw something on Twitter about an IT conference which had run out of badges saying something like ‘don’t even fucking think of talking to me’ but had plenty of ‘come talk to me’ badges left, which struck me as funny :)

My kids think my most embarrassing quality is talking to strangers...

At the end of last weeks race someone I didnt recognise came up to me and said "you're the person who chatted to me all round the herts half last year". Guess that makes me happy to chat, but don't expect me to remember who you are or what you said!

My kids have the same opinion as Fleecys
