I wondered how long it would take for a Stonewall comment. I'm not sure a political activist group trumps the medical research of a gender biologist when deifining a woman.

Try this Jovi lovescihub.wordpress.com its a site that tries to make academic journals more accessible. The links keep changing because they get closed down by the journals. I used it a lot during my PhD.

Jovi the point is that genuine transgender people are not transitioning just so they can gain access to women's facilities. This is a serious process that they undertake because of the person they feel they are - they aren't deviants looking for an opportunity. Those who are pre-disposed to do these acts aren't waiting for the law to allow them to dress as women to gain entry, as you see they are (and presumably always have been) doing that anyway. Bad people act outside societal norms. You have to look at the risk, nothing in life has no risk, there will always be example of people breaking the law or social rules. What is the percentage of this being high risk though? There is no evidence to say that there is a high risk that people being allowed to ID as women will abuse this. Allowing the structure of society to be based on fear of something is the wrong way about. The question should be "What do we want society to look like?" "is this a valuable way for society to act?" Yes? If so, how can we implement it and mitigate any potential risks that this might bring? |

Gor blimey. It's hard picking up the salient points in this thread with the constant attacks on anyone with a slightly differing opinion coupled with their posts being mis-quoted and twisted. Being angry and strongly opinioned is fine but anyone exploring the topic should be encouraged not slapped down with bizarre dismissals of their arguments. The straw man is getting a whipping and so therefore is the progress of the discussion.

Thanks TM - I've been hovering over the "cool it everyone" button this morning. Except that it doesn't exist. I note that several of the earlier posters on this thread have gone quiet, which is really not a good outcome, and the biggest indicator that this thread is not making helpful progress :-/ So whereas I might have been tempted to issue some rebukes for the confrontational nature of some of the posts, I instead wanted to direct a post to the people who have melted away. I just want to say sorry really. I would like fairness, and safety, and fun for all - common ground rather than trenches. I hope we get there one day, and I'd much rather talk about that. |
