I've had pneumonia jab, no affect at all.

Haven't had shingles jab as NHS have decided on an idiotic method of introduction to over 65's

I saw the consultant today, we are going to try another steroid injection, if that doesn’t work then it will be surgery to remove the hip bursa, probably 3-4 month wait, until then I will keep trundling.

UltraDunc shingles vaccine is now being rolled out to over 65's (used to be 70 I think)

Who will get the shingles vaccine
From 1 September 2023, the vaccine programme is being offered to the following:

healthy people aged 70 to 79 years who have not yet been vaccinated
people aged 50 years and over with a severely weakened immune system
healthy people aged 60 to 70 years will become eligible for the vaccine over the next 5 years, when they turn 65 or 70 years
You will remain eligible for the shingles vaccine until your 80th birthday, unless you have a weakened immune system; people with a severely weakened immune system remain eligible for vaccine. The sooner you have the vaccine, the earlier you will be protected.

The roll out is daft, when you reach your 65th birthday you'll be called for vaccination. Those already older than 65 have to wait until they're 70. I believe questions were going to be asked in parliament about such a daft roll out.

This is the reasoning behind the roll out. Makes sense actually, given the state of the NHS currently 🙁

DoricQuine I can't see any sense in rolling out the vaccination to younger folk in their 60's first, why not start with those in their late sixties and gradually work towards the younger in that age group.

Shades People's immune system starts to wane from about age 50, and the older one becomes the less protective it is.

Since vaccines are only as effective as the recipient's immune system - if the I.S. is "weak", it won't produce a "strong" immune response to the vaccine - given the limited resources (see DoricQuine's post above), it is sensible to initially give the vaccine to those who will most benefit from it, i.e., the 65s first, rather than the 70s who will not respond so well.

Those in their 80s won't routinely be offered the vaccine because by that age, their I.S. is quite weak and will have difficulty in producing an effective response.

Flatlander I understand that.

The vaccine is already given to 70 year olds and has been for some years, as far as I know.

Shingles is more common the older we get.

I can't see the sense that someone who is 65 now will receive the vaccine but someone of my age (67) will have to wait until I'm 70.

Canute
I set off for my run today in sunshine, in tee shirt and shorts, though I was expecting April showers. Within minutes the first shower hit me. I was running into a north-westerly breeze. The hills ahead of me were obscured by cloud and rain, though there were patches of blue behind me. I was looking forward to a change of direction. After a few Km I turned south-eastwards. I was grateful the wind was now behind me because the rain had turned to sleet. A few minutes later by back was being pelted by hail. For the final stretch, I headed westwards again, and the sleet was in my face. Nonetheless there were cheerful patches of blue to the south, and even some glimpses of sun.

I was reminded of words from Shakespeare’s sonnet: ‘Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May and summer’s lease hath all too short a date’.

I found it odd too Shades. I will be 70 later this year, so not long to wait for me.

A character building run Canute! It feels very cold again in Hampshire today, but no hail, just heavy rain showers.

Got something to say?
