Thanks um (and again, everyone). It's definitely very reassuring to know that in just about every aspect (whether that's servers, car maintenance, gardening, running, everything), there's someone here I can turn to for some pro advice. It's what makes our site a community, and therefore all the more important to keep it available to all.

Can't help with the server type techno-babble, however, I am a Software Functional Testing Consultant if you've ever a need of some aid in that direction.

Tommy.

A reasonable RAID description ... note that as you go up the scale the number of disks (and controllers) increases x3 or x4 or x5 ...

I think the support and confidence from your current hosting provider is important too.

I had a 1 hour chat with my pal that builds dozens of websites for other people and then deploys them on a couple of different hosting platforms for them and supports them. And his concern about moving to Azure, AWS or even just to a different hosting provider with "better, cheaper" hosting is just what you said - better the devil you know! Or more, whoever you move to may have problems that you just don't know until you get there!

I suppose I was just surprised that anyone was still using physical server hosting and with older OS versions etc. And hence the pain of upgrading from 32 bit to 64 bit OS, swapping out physical disks, installing physical RAM etc. I'm used to all hosting being on virtual server environments now any allocating more memory, CPU, storage or even a whole additional server is just a few clicks on the VM management console! Not that that doesn't also go wrong sometimes. With catastrophic effects sometimes too!

Will keep digging a bit, but if you're happy that the current providers are good eggs and helping all they can, then you're probably in the best boat you can be. :-) G

Agree with HG, although I would suggest enquiring about a different, more fault tolerant RAID configuration, as mentioned on the Podcast thread.

The I in RAID used to stand for "Inexpensive" by the way. Don't know if that is still considered the case!

I'm assuming that Fetch has spoken to his current provider about what could be done to avoid problems but with minimum cost. So that's why I was ignoring extending their offering. Anything more they could offer I had assumed would incur additional cost.

Whereas a provider with a completely different platform (i.e. already virtual server based) would have a charging model that might inherently offer more for less. We'll see. :-) G

These days it seems to stand for independent, depending on who you trust.

I buy server space off Heart Internet for both my websites, costs have been low over the years but then we don't have anything like the access and throughput the FE must generate.

Happy - I can't make my mind up if you're joking or not with the "inexpensive" thing. I've never heard that and I've been working with disc arrays for many years .... :-)

I just googled it. You clearly weren't joking :-)

Seriously, I've never heard that before - like Diogenes said, I've always known it to stand for "independent".

Conversely, I had always thought of it as 'inexpensive' until I double-checked yesterday.
