I had company Cortinas for a while in the 1980s. Big, they were - one was an estate that was about the size of Dunstable.

Cortinas? 1980s? I thought we were up to the Sierra by then, but I wasn't really paying attention.

Cars I remember my Dad owning:
Standard 10
Hillman Imp
Hillman Hunter
Audi 80 (KCD 868P)
Ford Escort Popular (VLK 47S) not with me it wasn't, not after the Audi. It was a company car).

Then he had the non-running Princess (OPM 925R) which he ended up trading in for a Marina (HGT 763T). Now that was a terrible car. I learnt to drive in it, changing gear was a matter of guesswork and luck.

My first car was a Triumph 1500TC (UYV 676M). That was a much better drive.

Ford used to use the 'Popular' model as a euphemism for 'crappiest model in the range with naff all extras'

I think they went Popular, L, GL, GLS then Ghia. Ghia went to vinyl roof/part wood dashboard levels of luxury. Can't recall where vinyl seats ended and cloth seats began...

I drove a Mini once, on which heater and key start were extras.

Popular Plus was the base model with a token frippery like a wing mirror on the passenger side IIRC?

I remember perusing a company car spec list and one car listed 'rubber mats' among the standard equipment for the vehicle.
