A tribute to Frank Sinatra? That seems to be on every other week here, alternating with the *over 40s disco*

I went to see the Kiwi wonder that is Aldous Harding at the Roundhouse last night.

I fell in love with her album 'Party' a year or two back. 'Designer' came out this year and is equally as mad as a box of frogs. Watching her live was a treat and a chore. Her vocals were brilliant yet she was so very ponderous moving around the stage glacially between songs looking every inch the loon you might imagine her to be. The sold out crowd didn't know quite what to make of her.

Often going to a gig is a celebration of an artist you love, even if they are rubbish you what to clap and cheer because their music excites you or means something. Last night the sense of wanting to celebrate her was thick in the air but Harding clearly isn't in it for that; it's her art and she was in the zone, focused, delivering what she wanted us to hear. Throughout someone kept shouting "Aldous, we love you!" Eventually, tiring of the interruption she dead panned "Thank you...(huge pause)..I am rather busy right now" Cue much OTT laughing.

Performer wise it was low key with her playing a lot of the quiet, simpler songs. Yet there were exquisite moments. Most memorable being during "What if The Birds Aren't Singing..." oh lord the sheer manic "look inside my brain and see whats going on" refrain of the chorus where she suggests maybe the birds aren't singing (i.e. happily) but are screaming. Think of the world where the birds scream every morning, noon and night; what the f*ck would make them scream .... well maybe humanity.

I sensed some wanted to lose it and do more of the mad wide eyed stuff, but she isn't a performing monkey. She's unique and we need more of her view on the world, both outside and inside us all.

White Lies last night, and despite wanting to like them I'm now even further in the minority of thinking they should stick to the recording studio. Their sound is great (even in the Academy it was OK) and their light show was the best I've seen for a while, but on stage it's a bit like watching paint dry. The frontman is wooden, and even on the rare occasions he tries to engage the crowd it feels like he's on Chapter 1 of The Dummies Guide to being a Lead Singer. The rest of the band where invisible.

Granted this stinking cold didn't help, but they just did nothing for me at all. It rates very slightly behind Ten Tonnes (at a festival, I lasted 10 minutes) for worst gig of the year.

Feel free to tell me I'm completely wrong. I'm very used to it :-)
