That's most likely because you're moving too far down the slide to begin your stroke. One of the video's I've linked to you will cover this but you don't want your shins to go past vertical. The problem is that if they do your leg is so bent that it's less effective at generating power at the start of the stroke, and a side effect is that your heels lift and you load through your toes and achilles rather than more solidly through your heels.

I don't think I've explained that very well but Dark Horse certainly do in one of the clips, and the video makes it a lot clearer. Both Dark Horse and Training Tall will tell you that heel lift is to be avoided.

I will worship at the altar of Shane Farmer forever. Here's a short clip about heels down rowing and why it helps.

Thank you. The more I learn about rowing the more I realise I've been doing everything wrong!

It's easy to do it wrong when you don't know. Luckily it's almost as easy to do it right once you know how.

Haha Nellers beer and wine is the only thing we panic bought 👍

Welcome Deajay, good choice of home exercise, you'll fall in love with the erg, and then hate it, and then love it, hate/love hate/love... or maybe that's just me 😁
Seriously though it's a great low impact, full body workout and you'll quickly see improvements!

5500m tonight with 100m efforts every 500m just to remind myself how unfit I am.

I got in the shed early today. It was chilly when I started (-1.2c) so I kept my hat on and didn't open the windows.

60 minutes at r18, 13.5km later and it was about 7 degrees and I'd taken my hat off.

How are you all coping with being stuck indoors? Hope you're all healthy and being able to get some erging done.

I always start the drive with the heels slightly off the footrest, I guess I'm not as supple as I used to be. I don't think it matters hugely as long as you're not leaning too far forward, and as long as you keep your arms straight on the drive - it's the legs doing the work, not the arms.

Anyhoo, another 10,000 metres this morning. Nice and slow, same pace and hr as the previous sesh. I've been told to expect a drop to short time working soon, so I guess that means more erging.

Lucky to have machine at home, in the shed. It was warm yesterday, early evening. Shed had the sun on it all day so it was t-shirt off by the time I had finished.

Chilly start again (-2c) his morning. 10k at r18 done. Allowed my HR to do it's own thing and worked on leg drive and power in every stroke. 43:37, so a 2:10 average pace, has made me happy today.

Yes, definitely pleased that I invested in the Concept2 when I did. Can't imagine what I'd be like by this stage if I couldn't run or Erg or anything.

Clare, I've seen a few runs posted. I hope that's part of your rehab and not a desperation move despite it! Keep well.
