My goodness. Certainly can’t imagine doing Jacks rake on a school trip nowadays.

I have done it once, 9 years ago. Once was enough. |

Velociraptor
We took Tink and Fellmouse on Jack's Rake when they were in their teens and they enjoyed it a lot, but we'd already ascertained that they were confident scramblers.

I think that's the thing V'rap, for anybody confident it's a pretty benign scramble with only a couple of moves that require much thought (and ideally a long reach). I suspect that many of the people who get into trouble with it are the same ones that head out with no map, no kit, and no idea, so I don't see warnings on maps or guidebooks making much difference as they'd be ignored. Anyone who was diligent to read and take notice of such warnings are probably already well enough informed from the info that's out there. Unfortunately some times accidents will happen, even to the most skilled and prepared of people. I confess a degree of self interest in throwing all my change into any MRT donation box I come across! I assume NE's not envisaging a big red sign at the bottom saying it's dangerous, as once started I'm not sure where that will end (Alton Towers-style "you must be this tall" sticks?) and it'd probably still be ignored anyway. |

Discovered a beautiful quiet valley today.. Swindale. Just west of Shap. Walked up the Old Corpse road and picked up a couple of Wainwrights. Cut down Gatesgarth, and then the trudge through Mosedale. If you seek remoteness and isolation .. Mosedale is for you. Swindale scenery was stunning.. and if you like a textbook example of a glaciated valley.. you will be in heaven. |

Oh, and not so good... my first ‘up to my thighs’ in bog episode. That was Mosedale. James yanked me out .. sort of horizontally, so all was well. But it made me afraid of ever walking in remote places on my own. Maybe that’s an over reaction? |

Did you visit Mosedale Cottage RE? I've only seen it from a distance, it's on my Visit List. Guessing you did Selside and then Branstree?
