From Patterdale Mountain Rescue (26 August). Oh dear! "At 21:30 on Monday evening Cumbria Police alerted the team to a large family group that were lost somewhere between Raise and Stybarrow Dodd. Having begun their walk at 16:00 and being poorly equipped with just one torch between them and insufficient warm clothes it was decided that they would need to be escorted from the fell by team members. The rescue took 4 hours and involved 7 rescuers." |

One of my fave campsite views Ros :-). Along with the one from @DolgamCampsite Sad about the Pavey Ark death, but it's going to happen with easily accessible scramble routes, just like it regularly does on Crib Goch. Also feel sorry for the DoE group who found the dead body in the Ingleborough summit shelter. |

I think the dangers of Pavey Ark should be flagged up a little more than they are. I know there are those that are resistant to this kind of thing and that people should be responsible for themselves, but the demographics are clear and if a life could be saved by reaching out to a particular group, then surely it's got to be worth doing. Then again, i could be a bit gun-shy about PA. I was in Langdale in 2012 when there were two deaths on two consecutive days and remember the sombre way the MRT went about business, it was very sad Does anyone read George Kitching's blogs? They're a bit patronising, but he does dig up some interesting stuff about the Lakeland Fells. His most recent one describes his climb up Pavey Ark. |

That might be where I saw a description of the scramble recently that was enough to tell me not to try it!

I have only done Jack's Rake once. I was about 17 and part of a school group. We all saw it as a fairly exciting scramble, but as you would expect at that age, we didn't think about the risk at all. There were a couple of teachers with us and from memory they brought up the rear. I don't remember any scary moments. No ropes. This was long before the days of written risk assessments and I wonder what that would look like today. I don't think I would try it again in any case, as I find exposed heights much more challenging than I used to. We did Lords Rake the same year. |
