I *have* some poles somewhere. I haven't done anything other than mild countryside walking for ages, so they are mouldering. But I do remember a Peak District walk when I felt far more confident descending a wonky path with them. I am very much not a mountain goat and I fear falling.

Poles are absolutely amazing. I smashed Pooley Bridge to Ambleside the other week using them from the start. What is there not to love? 1. Helps keep you upright. 2. Helps keep your pelvis level. 3. Helps smash the ascents. 4. Helps take the pressure of the quads on the descent. If the RD allows them it is an advantage people would be foolish not to take. |

Thanks for the responses all. As I treat walking as a healthy and enjoyable leisure activity rather than a sport qua sport - and therefore have no desire to ‘smash’ anything - i’ll remain pole-free for now.

Me and MrsC use them when bothying and carrying big bags (as opposed to day sacks). Also for XC skiing, but that’s a different game altogether. Otherwise not. |

I need to add it's only for Ultra events particularly those fifty miles and more.
