Gosh you are all being so kind, thank you. Yes the 1 am call was a bit disorientating but we knew what it was going to be.

In an age when we hear so many awful stories about end of life care for the elderly, I cannot praise my m-i-l's care highly enough. We could turn up any time unannounced and she would be comfortable, clean and look well cared for. They always had time to talk and (with us being 600 miles away) kept us regularly informed. Wonderful, wonderful people. She/we were very blessed.

It's lovely to hear stories of good care that works out well, especially with my father facing (in high probability) a similar fate in the future.

600 miles away. Wow. That will be difficult. Even my 55 miles away feels hard at the moment.

I can't imagine coping at the distance and fortunately won't have to - in laws are due to move and be a five minute walk away on the 29th September. Could be looking at a whole load of different stress then - but hopefully not for a while once we have them settled, depends on how FiL copes with the move. I'm hoping it won't stress and disorientate him too much as he's visited us and knows his way round the village so it won't be totally new. Difficult to predict though.

I thought I'd start a thread, as lots of us have elderly folks that we worry about/care for.

Also: After someone dies, if their home insurance was only in their name, sadly the cover becomes void. But if the policy was in joint names, it will still cover the surviving policyholder (though the names on the policy will need to be updated).

Pension Credit. The rules are a bit complex but if your elderly relative has some sort of disability (in this case dementia/Alzheimer's) and go into a home, they may be able to claim pension credit. So if carers allowance stops, it seems pension credit can start. It can also be backdated.
