I did the new year's day dip here this year, which was also rather chilly (about 7° water temp iirc) but over all quite fun. It wasn't what I expected at the time, which threw me a lot - most of the people there barely even got their toes wet and it was sponsored by Unox (the sausage and soup making people) so it felt a bit manufactured, but I'm still glad I did it.

I was just debating if it was worth going again next year and still haven't decided.

I’ll be popping by to wish people a happy Christmas.

Sorry to hear that it causes you to wish to hibernate Corrah and I know many others who are in the same position.

I do think it can be blown out of proportion. As a child we didn’t have a lot of money (like a lot of my friends / family) but while the focus was on santa bringing us gifts it was a lot lower key one ‘big present’ and other smaller gifts generally a compendium of games would be there which we’d play as a family, colouring books, reading books things to be interactive with.

A lot of the gifts we gave we made. We went carol singing around the village it was about families and spending time together.

I miss the simplicity of it and my cousin this year has asked that instead of buying the likes things we arrange to do something with them - cinema trip, sleep over, pizza / movie night (some say she’s not daft) but she’s right they get so much a day/night out will stick more in their minds.

Love that Geordiesanta. Don't think I will ever look forward to Christmas but might be easier to cope with if it didn't seem to start in August!

One of the problems with Christmas seems to be the feeling of being told how it should be.

Hubby and I have a very simple Christmas - just the two of us and we get each other something that we want, not some useless surprise, and I don't cook anything particularly special, though we might have some nice choc as a treat.

My stepsister has the Christmases that all these commercials dream of. I think my dad was uncomfortable with them, as I remember one year when we drove home, that he alluded to being able to feed a small village with the amount of food and money spent there.

We do the same as you Garfield, we often book a PI for a couple of nights so we can do some parkrun tourism and pack a picnic to have in the room.

Totally agree Doc, we've had curry or bbq on Christmas Day before and the comments we've had about not having turkey and all the trimmings!

I find christmas is so full of pressure and it has ruined it. All the adverts of buy this for your loved one it's only xxxx amount blah blah no wonder people get in debt.

We try to keep it simple - it's all about the kids. We try to keep the presents down to a few and always have a budget (daughter doesn't want them having loads and being spoilt which is great). We have a large family so with daughter, us and great grandparents they get a fair bit of stuff but if they dont need anything then money will go away.

Christmas day is as follows - walk dog, breakfast, visit mum, visit son and then arrive at daughters..presents, play with kids, a family dog walk, more play time and then bed! OH is on call Christmas day this year which suits him fine. He hates all the pressure, hype.
