I'm in. Starting at 1963 with A Mind to Murder, PD James which happens to be at the top of the list for that year. I think I've read it before but it will have been years ago. I'll aim to choose books that I can get at the library too. I've got a couple of books to finish first though.

there are some truly atrocious sounding books in 1972 as well:
Down Payment on Death
Sergeant Cluff Rings True
The Guns of Avalon
The Erection Set (mind boggles, particularly when the cover is decidedly page 3...)
The Sheep Look Up (look up what?)

Sounds fun. I checked the first 20 years of my life on the fantastic fiction site, then from 1900 up to my birth year, and I've read at least one book from those lists for every year, generally from the first page of the list - the exception being 1916, where I needed to look all the way through to page 10 to find A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Turns out that if you read anything and frequently binge on popular authors who published a book a year or more, you're covered. P G Wodehouse and Agatha Christie will get you most of the way by themselves. Plan is to start with this year and see how far back I can get by this time next year. Fiction only, and it has to be something I haven't read. I re-read too much. Haven't yet decided whether to be strict about the year order. The time machine aspect is attractive. Backwards through time, reeling from year to year on a dizzying journey into the past... Will certainly be reading other things in between, though. First book is The Wonder, by Emma Donahue.

Jesus, I just looked at the blurb for The Sheep Look Up and it is uncanny how they have predicted the future 44 years ago (apart from the organic food, not a huge profit in that)...

'An enduring classic, this book offers a dramatic and prophetic look at the potential consequences of the escalating destruction of Earth. In this nightmare society, air pollution is so bad that gas masks are commonplace. Infant mortality is up, and everyone seems to suffer from some form of ailment. The water is polluted, and only the poor drink from the tap. The government is ineffectual, and corporate interests scramble to make a profit from water purifiers, gas masks, and organic foods. Environmentalist Austin Train is on the run. The Trainites, environmental activists and sometime terrorists, want him to lead their movement. The government wants him in jail, or preferably, executed. The media wants a circus. Everyone has a plan for Train, but Train has a plan of his own. This suspenseful science fiction drama is now available to a new generation of enthusiasts.'

It's a great idea for a challenge - well done Owlie for thinking it up :-)

I'm in. I still haven't decided what to read first. Like JenLov, I'll be starting in 1963 but I've already read all the PD James books. I have a week or two to decide on something!

I am very tempted by this though doubt I will manage it in a year.
No harm in making a start though.

I could actually commence with Flowers for Algernon as that was published in 1966 and I didn't manage to read it when it was the Book Group book.
